producers are top-dressed in the
stalls during milking.
The Hoovers strive for top
quality alfalfa for the haylage,
and, although a bit uncommon for
dairy feed, they use anhydrous
ammonia on the com silage to
increase the protein by 4 or 5
percent. Dale estimated that this
saves them 25 to 40 percent on feed
costs since they don’t need to buy
soybeans, for instance, to up the
protein.
Dean explained that they’ve
used anhydrous ammonia in the
steer operation for five or six years
because it’s a cheap source of
protein. Some think it’s not the
best form of protein for dairy
animals and may consequently
cause health problems.
Although their thoughts can’t be
proven, -the Hoovers have
speculated about the connection
between this protein source and a
problem they had with twisted
stomachs. They’ve alleviated that
problem by feeding a good source
of protein in the concentrate, and
by improving their management of
the dry and fresh cows For the

The Hoovers are optimistic
about the future of agriculture and
their part in it, although their
attitudes may have been dam
pened a bit in the past couple
years. As well as improving their
dairy herd in the next few years,
they’d also like to rent or buy
additional land since they do need
to buy a fair amount of com.
Along with planning and ef
ficiency goes cooperation for the
Hoovers. The entire family is very
much a part of the farm. Dean’s
wife Mary Ann milks quite often,
and Dale’s wife Charlotte handles
a lot of the book work and is a relief
milker as well. Dale and
Charlotte’s children, Angie, Matt,
and Alicia, also pitch in. Matt
looks forward to showing a junior
calf at the Pa. Junior Dairy Show
next week.
Charlotte remarked that the
opportunity to raise children in the
farm environment is really a
blessing. There’s no doubt that the
strength of their family has a lot to
do with the success of the Hoovers
of Annville.

earlier this year, the best either
one could muster was a reserve
champion weightclass win,
prompting the second-year FFA’er
to question the wisdom of forking
over substantial sums for a “pig in
a poke”.
Not content to stop with the
grand championship, Byers went
on to take top honors in senior
showmanship, as well. Gaining
this honor will enable him to once
again test his free pig theory, as
the top showsman was the
recipient of two feeder pigs
courtesy of Quarryville Farm
Credit.
A second lucky hog showman
was Tiffany Rohrer who will also
receive a pair of feeder pigs,
donated by the Solanco FFA
Alumni, for being named cham
pion junior showman.
The show’s reserve champion
pig was exhibited by Cindy
Trimble, filling in for her brother
Scott, who was running a cross
country race at the time of the
show. Scott’s 240-pound Chester-
Duroc cross was bred by Jim
Parlette.
The 14-year-old son of Don and
Carol Trimble lives in Peach
bottom and is a veteran of 4-H
competition, having exhibited
animals for the past seven years.
Though he was awarded a reserve
championship during his first year
of competition, other major titles
have eluded him since that time.
Sometimes it takes a big sister to
get the job done.

This was the first show of the

Other top contenders for the
grand championship were Fritz
Frey and Jeff Craig who were
awarded champion and reserve
honors, respectively, in the FFA
show.
Frey then went on to finish the
show with style, taking top honors
in the senior showmanship contest.
Marjean Smith was named the
