Heritage Day

ask them questions
Maryland agriculture.
Acting as emcee for the event,
State Controller Louis Goldstein
reminisced about watching the
boats sail into the harbor when he
was a boy. “Today we are
recreating the beauty, sights,
sounds and smells of a day gone
by,” he said.
Planning for the event, which
drew an estimated 10,000 people,
began in June, when Edward
Coveil, a retired poultry farmer,
decided that agriculture’s con
tribution to the economy should be
recognized as part of the state’s
350th anniversary celebration
taking place this year.
The idea mushroomed into a
successful event that Covell hopes
will be repeated next year. This
year, over half of Maryland’s 23
counties took part in the
celebration, and Covell hopes that
next year more of them will be able
to participate.
