Bridgette Boyer wasn’t the only
4-Her to win a grand championship
in the open dairy shows. In the
Brown Swiss open show, Mike
Welsh, East Berlin, repeated his
Wednesday 4-H wins. His Welsh
Ponderosa Titan Princess won the
grand championship titles, and her
dam, McCoy Delegate Princess
picked up the reserve grand
honors.
In the Guernsey and Jersey open
shows, held Wednesday evening,
most of the ribbons were taken
home by three exhibitors. Rutter
Brothers swept the Guernsey
classes, with two homebred cows,
Rutter Brothers Fayvors Buffy
and senior 2-year-old Rutter
Brothers Buckys Bear, gaining the
grand and reserve grand titles.
Jersey honors were split by
Mildred Seeds of Downingtown and
Mar-De Farms, Newville. Seeds
showed Top-O-Hill Milestone
Tempty to the grand cham
pionship, and Mark Deaven of
Mar-De Farms had the reserve
grand winner, Stylish Blonde Katy.
Seeds, a long-time showman,
remarked that Tempty has won all
but one of every class she has
competed in.
The Aryshire and Milking
Shorthorn contests were also each
dominated by a single exhibitor.
Samuel Diehl showed his
Aryshires to the open cham
pionships. Three-year-old C.C.
Gretas Bonnie was named senior
and grand champion, and C.C.S.
Velvet Cathy was selected as the
reserve winner.
The Young’s of Three Springs
Farm showed most of the Milking
Shorthorns. Three Springs P.S.
Daisy walked into the grand
championship spot, and the
reserve champion was dry cow
Three Springs 80. BO is a three
time all-Amencan.
Judges for the Wednesday
evening and Thursday open dairy
shows were John Morris of
Frederick, Md., and Mike Stiles of
Clearbrook, Va. Morris is a for
mer dairy science specialist at the
University of Maryland, and Stiles
is part of Waverly Farm Jerseys of
Clearbrook.

YORK Most people think of 4-
H as a family affair, and the
results of the 4-H dairy show at the
York Fair on Wednesday seemed
to follow that theory. Sisters from
the Boyer family of York even
away with champion
honors in two different breeds.
Bridgette Boyer showed her
senior 2-year-old, Sunnybend Sexy
Glitter B Star, to the senior and
grand champion titles in the
Holstein show. She also captured
the champion showman title for all
breeds due to her presence in the
ring and attentiveness to the judge.
Meanwhile, Jenelle Boyer
picked up a few ribbons of her own,
including the reserve grand
champion rosette in the Guernsey
show with her 3-year-old Shelby.
Shelby and her daughter also won
the dam and daughter class for
Jenelle.
Jenelle and Bridgette’s parents,
Tom and June Boyer, breed and
own Holsteins, the exception being
Jenelle’s two Guernseys. She won
Shelby as a calf at a Guernsey
meeting, and her decision to raise
and show the calf -axis to have
reserve grand championships in both the 4-H and open shows
at the York Fair. At the halter of the reserve champion is Mel
Boiles.
a 4-H dairy family affair
It’s
been a good one.
Good decisions, along with
family support, were important
factors for the other champion
exhibitors, too.
Mike Welsh of East Berlin
showed his dam and daughter to
win the grand and reserve grand
championships in the Brown Swiss
show. McCoy Delegate Princess,
the 7-year-old reserve grand, was
one of the first animals that Mike
purchased. He chose Princess
despite the opinions of his parents,
said his mother, Emily Welsh.
Princess’ three-year-old daughter
captured the grand champion
Brown Swiss title for Mike. At age
16 Mike has been showing for nine
years.
For Chad Rutter, a good
breeding decision rather than a
good buying decision helped him
into the winners’ circle. His
homebred senior yearling, Opal,
was awarded the grand cham
pionship in the Guernsey show.
Rutter Brothers Top-Dollar Opal
was named an all-American junior
calf and also won first prize in a
national open show in Kentucky.
The Youngs of Three Springs Farm took th
reserve grand Milking Shorthorn championships.
