Al2—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Saptembar 15,1984 Now is the Time (Continued from Page A 10) Safety Week will be observed during the week of September 16 through 22. This proclamation is very important during this busy corn harvest and fall grain plan ting season. Safety is something we should practice all the time, but we need a gentle reminder sometimes. Here are some safety rules that apply to everyone: ... Read and follow the operator’s manual for each machine you’re using. ... Make sure all workers are trained and competent to carry out their work safely. ... Keep all shielding in place. ... Always disengage and turn off the engine before unclogging, adjusting or servicing equipment. ... Watch where you are going. ... Keep extra riders off and away. ... Take work breaks with refreshments to maintain alert ness and reduce fatigue. Let’s have a safe harvest season and a safe year. To Check Water Supplies Quality drinking water is a great asset on the farm as well as in the urban areas. Some farmers may be having trouble with high bac terial count or high nitrates in their well water supply. These are difficult problems to correct. However, in many cases the trouble comes from surface water getting into the well. We urge all rural residents to check their wells and be sure that surface water is diverted away from the well area. This is especially true if the well is located DeLavai Dee , DeLaval Do DeLavai does the best job of all l Call Cecil Dairy Service 301-658-6923 [oa-iisnsr For the best deal | of all | See Section C i Page 46 SURDIAC COAL STAVES Hopper Feed and Automatic Draft OFF SEASON PRICES BOWMAN'S STOVE SHOP RD 3, Ephrata, PA 17522 Rt. 322,1 Mi. This time my victim is the innocent milk weigher for DHIA or DHTR. I realize that these devoted individuals make all records possible, but I have my complaints about the profession. PARTS ★ SALES * SERVICE ever want to meet; he just has poor timing. Two of my friends have recently become certified testers, and even though they said they received no training in poor timing, I’m not sure that they are telling the truth. DHIA AND DHIR must think I am a fool. They call their checks complete surprises but I say that’s just bull. Their monthly production checks are no mystery to me. I know when they’ll visit with 99% accuracy. Should our daily bulktank reading abruptly take a drastic fall, the following morning I’ll expect our herd tester’s friendly call. When our feed simply runs out (one of my favorite examples). I don’t plan anything that evening; we’ll be taking milk samples. If we oversleep for 3 mornings straight it’s an easy giveaway. It’s almost as sure of a bet as if we’re putting hay away. I don’t know how they do it: my research just scratches the surface. Most people struggle through the forms themselves or pay a professional to do it for them. A few are skilled in tax reporting and even complete returns for others. No matter which category you’re in, Penn State’s income tax preparation workshop can teach you to prepare farm, small business and personal tax returns. This introduction to income tax preparation will be held Oct. 8, 9 and 10 at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center, and Oct. 23,24 and 25 at the Meadville Holiday Inn. Larry Jenkins and Jesse G. Cooper, both farm management Extension specialists from Penn State, along with representatives from the Internal Revenue Ser vice, and area tax practitioners will conduct the workshops. Participants will learn to prepare a federal 1040 form for individual or joint tax return, including exemptions, deductions and credit allowances. Speakers will also discuss methods of depreciation, investment tax credit, short- and long-term capital gains, and treatment of interest, dividends and royalties. Preregistration is required. Prior to Oct. 1, the registration fee is $BO, which includes three lunches and workshop materials. After October 1, the fee is $9O. In formation and application forms for either session are available from the Cooperative Extension Service office in each county.
