    County Ham to play at Guernsey Bam
Country Ham, a bluegrass, old-time string band which
originated in Washington D.C., will be appearing at the
Guernsey Barn, on Saturday, September 8 at 8 p.m. The
group features Carl Pagter on clawhammer banjo and
baritone lead; Judie Cox Pagter on guitar, autoharp and vocal
lead and harmony; Ray Weiler on mandolin and guitar singing
tenor or baritone; the animated Bob White on string bass;
and the fiddling of talented Bob Spates.
Doors for their show open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $7 for
adults and $3 for kids aged 6 to 12. Children under 3 can
listen for free.

NEWPORT - At the Perry
County Fair last week Dee Curtis
of R 1 Landisburg won the grand
champion open and 4-H baby beef
honors with her 1,181 pound steer.
Reserve 4-H champion and
reserve open steer championship
honors went to Mark Michner, R 1
Shermans Dale, with his 1,036
pound Angus.
Tim Weigel of R 2 Millerstown,
captured the champion FFA steer
honors, while Greg Black of R 1
Newport received the reserve
champion FFA steer honors.
Karla Gabel of Millerstown won
the champion 4-H steer
showmanship award while her
brother, Judd, received the
reserve champion showmanship
honors.
Champion steer owner Dee
Curtis also captured the champion
4-H steer fitting award, and Mark
Michener won the reserve fitting
award.
The steer classes were divided
into the lightweights and
heavyweights. Judge Tony
Dobrosky of York placed seven
lightweights and seven
heavyweights. The winning
heavyweight owned by Dee Curtis
finally gained top honors over
Mark Michener’s winning light
weight.

the fair. Eric Cauffman, Miller
stown, a fist year member, won the
reserve honors.
The FFA champion market hog
was won by Tom Knisely of
Millerstown. Roy Kanagy of
Newport received the reserve FFA
Award.
The 42 market hogs shown were
divided into five classes according
to weight. The lightweight division
was won by Mark Cauffman of
Millerstown. Eric Cauffman,
topped the medium lightweight
division and eventually was named
reserve 4-H champion.
The mediumweight division was
won by Mark Harris of Newport.
Dee Curtis topped the medium
heavyweight division and went on
to win the championship.
The heavyweight class was won
by Tim Weigel of Millerstown.
In the 4-H junior member
division, Dee Curtis was named the
outstanding showman and fitter.
The senior division 4-H showman
and fitter was won by Carl Curtis.
Curtis also won the FFA fitting
and showmanship contest.
The judge was Tony UobrosKy,
York County Agricultural Agent.

the 1984 4-H and open market lamb

Lancaster Society 34 met on The group is planning a bus trip

breeding sheep championship at
the 4-H roundup this past week.
Melissa’s brother, Michael, won
the reserve open and 4-H champion
market lamb honors, while
Gretchen Montgomery of New
Bloomfield received the reserve 4-
H breeding ewe award.
Twelve market lambs and 12
breeding sheep were judged by
Tony Dobrosky of York.
In the lightweight division of the
market lambs, Michael Mon
tgomery topped the class while
Tammy Little of Newport placed
second. Melissa and Michael
topped the heavyweight division.
Judge Dobrosky then went to the
heavyweights for his market lamb
champions.
Gretchen Montgomery won the
ewe lamb contest with Kim Hench
of Kistler placing second. In the
yearling ewe division, Sandra
Tressler placed first and Nathaniel
Hench of Kistler placed second.
Judge Dobrosky then selected
Tressler’s yearling for the
champion and Montgomery ewe
lamb for the reserve breeding ewe.
The FFA market lamb division
was won by Ethel Fry of Sher
mansdale.
