Southcentral District 4-H Dairy Show features parade of cows from seven counties

HARRISBURG - The 17th
Annual Southcentral District 4-H
Dairy Show held at the Farm Show
Building in Harrisburg on Monday
attracted 4-H’ers and cows from
seven counties, including Adams,
Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin,
Lancaster, Lebanon and York.
From a field of 146 Holsteins,
Jennifer Weimer’s senior two
year-old, Weim-Sharr-Mc Daisy
Doll-Et, won grand champion
Holstein honors.
At last year’s district dairy
show, Jennifer showed the reserve
grand champion. Jennifer is a
member of the Adams County
Dairy 4-H Club and is a student at
New Oxford High School.
Reserve grand champion of the
Holstein breed went to Michelle
Comman of Cumberland County.
Michelle showed her 4-year-old
Corlan Farms Chief Mary.
In the Brown Swiss breed
competition Mike Welsh of East
Berlin, York County, dominated,
showing both the grand and
reserve grand champions. The
grand champion award went to his
three-year-old Welsh Ponderosa
Titan Princess, while his senior
yearling, Welsh Ponderosa Kings
Bobbi, was named reserve grand.
Showing the only two entries in
the Milking Shorthorn breed,
Christine Young of Cumberland
County walked away with the
grand and reserve grand cham
pions. Her junior yearling was
named grand champion and her
Pa. Jersey Queen Carol Dreisbach presented Denise
Martin of Franklin County with the grand champion ribbon for
the Jersey breed, while Tom Arrowsmith, pmcaster, had the

Pennsylvania Jersey Queen
Carol Dreisbach presented Denise
Martin of Franklin County with the
grand championship title in the
Jersey breed. Denise won the
contest with her Top-O-Hill
Milestone Faithful.
Reserve grand champion Jersey
honors went to Tom Arrowsmith’s
senior two-year-old, Hillacres
Surville May. Tom is from Lan
caster County.
For the second year in a row, a
brother and sister team from
Dauphin County took the cham
pionship titles in the Ayrshire
breed. While Debra Shetterly had
the grand champion last year, her
brother Steven beat her out for the
grand championship this year with
his four-year-old Sycamore Meade
Champ’s Bessie. But Debra wasn’t
far behind, taking the reserve
grand championshiop with her
three-year-old Sycamore Meade
Champ’s Luvie.
Lancaster Countian Janice
Garber won the grand champion
Guernsey this year, with her senior
yearling, Willows B. Tex Velvet.
Reserve champion honors went to
Chad Rutter of York County. Chad
showed liis intermediate calf,
Rutter Bros. Emorys Bea.
Of the 261 animals exhibited, 146
were Holsteins, 22 were Brown
Swiss, 53 were Jerseys, 14 were
Ayrshires, 24 were Guernseys and
two were Milking Shorthorns.

Clifford Stiles, Winchester, Va.,
judged the Ayrsire, Jersey and
Milking Shorthorn type classes.
During the show, 4-H’ers who did
an outstanding job of fitting and
showing received master fitter or
master showman awards, but no
champions were selected in these
categories. Judges for the fitting
and showing awards were David
Hill, Emmitsburg, Md., and
Dennis Daubert, Pine Grove.
County Agent Glenn Shirk, who
acted as show manager, estimated
that 400 spectators were present to
observe the show.
The top blue ribbon animals
from this show are eligible to
compete in the Pennsylvania
Junior Dairy Show on Monday,
