■l6—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 1,1984 ip \ i I Select The Right Utensils and Save Energy The proper selection and use of cooking utensils can help you save energy in your kitchen. Read the following suggestions carefully to learn where you may be able to save your energy dollars. Match pots and pans to the surface unit. The bottom should cover the heating element but not extend more than one inch over the edge. This will help minimize the amount of heat loss to the air. If the pot or pan is to large for the sur face unit, it will heat unevenly and heat will reflect down to the range top around the unit and eventually craze it. Similarly, a flame should not extend beyond the pan. To ensure minimal beat loss from the pot or pan, it should have a flat bottom, straight sides and a tightly-fitting cover. Good utensils allow for efficient heat transfer and minimize loss of heat, thus lower heat settings can be used. A pressure saucepan can cut time and energy even more. Pots and pans should be thick enough to resist denting and warping. Aluminum is frequently used for cooking utensils. Both aluminum and copper are good conductors of heat and spread the heat evenly in the utensil; stainless steel is not as good a conductor. For improved spreading of heat for top-of-the range cooking, use stainless steel pans with aluminum or copper bottoms. Because of its thickness, cast iron heats up slowly; it is better for long cooking processes than for short jobs. Glass and ceramic glass are poor conductors of heat for top-of-the range cooking, but are good absorbers of radiant (oven) heat. When baking with these materials, the oven setting can be lowered 25 degrees. Slightly lower temperatures can be selected when using teflon-lined utensils for frying or pan-broiling on top of the range. Use a tea kettle instead of a pan for heating or boiling water to avoid heat loss through steam. Cover saucepans whenever possible. Food will cook faster and a lower temperature setting can be used. They are especially important when your child is at tending school. Children who feel good about the clothes they wear are usually more confident. Clothes for children ages six to twelve should be planned with this in mind. Feeling like they belong is im portant for children. If your children do not have clothes similar to those of the other children in school, they may feel insecure or inferior. In the early grades, children start to become conscious of the way their friends are dressing. Older elementary school children become more critical of their cioihes and may even be conscious of matching. But more important than good looks in clothes is comfort. Children want their clothes to be comfortable. The reason most often given by young children for not wearing a garment is poor fit. In fact, studies show that school age children most dislike clothes that hinder movement. Large garments that are bought for the child to grow into them are just as aggravating as those that are too tight. They will look awkward and hamper the child’s movements. Oversized garments will also look faded and worn if the child ever does grow into them. If your children are growing rapidly, look for features that adapt easily to growth such as deep hems and cuffs, tucks in skirts, undefined waistlines, separates, raglan or kimono sleeves and garments without tight cuffs or bands. Because children grow “up” faster than “out” these features will allow for longer wear. If your child does not like to wear hand-me-downs, make them look different by changing the style, trim or buttons. Whether new or hand-me-down, garments should complement the skin, hair and eyes of the child and should be styled to emphasize the child’s good features.
