KUTZTOWN - The 29th Annual
Pennsylvania Regional FFA Dairy
Show was held at the Kutztown
Fairgrounds last week and
featured over 100 top-notch dairy
entries from - nine counties. The
FFA students from Berks, Bucks,
Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon,
Lehigh, Northampton, Mon
tgomery, and Schuylkill Counties,
competed against each other for
top honors in fitting, showmanship,
and type shows in each breed.
Judging was on the Danish system,
when fitting and showmanship
judged during the breed shows.
Judging the Holstein show was
Samuel Acker, Chester Springs;
while Samuel Yoder,
Shoemakersville, judged the
colored breeds. Robert Gregory,
Oxford, judged the showmanship
competition, and Richard Hess,
Strasburg, appraised the fitting
contest.
Topping off a summer full qf
Grand Championships was John
Kline, Elco FFA. Kline’s C
Midland Mardi Judy again took the
Grand over Kline’s other entry,
Lime-Rock Conductor Sharon, who
got Reserve honors. These two
champions were both purchased
by the 21 year old Kline to add to
his 60 cow herd. The Grand
Champion is scored “Excellent -
90” and the Reserve Champion is a
“very good-87”.
Kline is dairying on his own and
rents his facilities from his father.
Rapidly becoming well-known in
the show ring, Kline credits his
family for the extra help that
milking cows and showing them
takes. “My family works
together,” he stated after
receiving the top rosettes in the
show.
Junior Championship honors of
the Holstein show went to Nelson
Bomgardner, Ono, of the Northern
Lebanon Chapter. His winning
Senior calf, Loving-Meadows
Magdalene, drew the judge’s at
Tom Arrowsmith and Ken Heisey.
Zollers and “Lady" taking grand championship and Gerald
Garber taking reserve honors. Judge Sam Yoder is at right.
Third major show title in recent weeks
in Holstein winne
tention to place her over the older
heifer entries. She is a daughter of
Vincent View Marvation.
Breeder-exhibitor honors went to
21-year-old Penny Bicksler,
Richland, Tulpehocken FFA
Chapter. Penny was also the
Champion Showman with her aged
cow entry, Russelldale B Chief
Tweety.
Andrew Zollers, Kutztown FFA,
dominated the Guernsey breed
with his repeat Grand Champion,
Foxie Springs Falcon Lady.
Currently dry, the aged cow is a
daughter of Spring Ridge G Falcon
and has won many championships
for her 18-year-old owner.
From the Garden Spot FFA,
Gerald Garber took the Reserve
Championships with his winning
junior calf, Willows K Henry Jewel
as Reserve Junior Champion and
his second-place aged cow,
Grassland Nev Julia, as Reserve
Grand. The 19 year old Garber
owns 23 Guernseys and says that
his Reserve Grand Champion is
currently projected over 21,000
pounds milk and 1200 pounds fat.
The Brown Swiss Grand
Champion and the Reserve Grand
Champion belongs to Bruce
Heilinger, Eastern Lebanon FFA.
The homebred champion, King
Princess Misty Midge, is a
daughter of E E Beautician King
and also took the Grand ribbons at
the recent Lebanon Fair. This first
place, junior two year old topped
Heilinger’s aged cow entry, Irons
Blueberry OCS, who took the
reserve honors.
Heilinger is the 16-year-old son of
Richard and Josephine Heilinger
who milk Holsteins and Brown
Swiss at R 2, Newmanstown.
Smiling with his ribbons, the young
Heilinger stated that he likes his
Brown Swiss much better than the
other animals on the farm.
In the Jersey competition, fif
teen-year-old Thomas Arrowsmith
exhibited the Junior and Grand
Champions. Arrowsmith, Rl,
Peach Bottom, from the Solanco
FFA, also captured the Breeder-
Exhibitor ribbons for the colored
breed shows. His Grand Cham
pion, Hillacres Celia Stephanie, is
a homebred senior two year old.
Arrowsmith stated that this was
her first show and he is looking
forward to attending the state
show.
“I really do like our two
champions in the Jersey breed,”
Judge Yoder stated. He was
referring not only to the two-year
old of Arrowsmith’s but also to the
14-year-old aged cow winner of
Kenneth Heisey, Elco, who took
the reserve ribbons.
The 21-year-old Heisey just
started his own milking herd in
October and milks 32 head of
Jerseys and Holsteins. Stating that
he likes working with the Jerseys,
his Reserve Champion, Freyhof
Prospector Heart, was purchased
at the Walebe Farms dispersal last
fall.
Arrowsmith and Heisey also took
the Junior Championships with
their heifer entries as they
dominated the Jersey show.
Heather Hemley, the FFA State
Reporter, took over the Ayrshire
show with ribbons for the Junior
Champion, and Grand Champion.
The 18-year-old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Delmas Hemley,
Lebanon, owns 16 animals and
says that they are much easier to
handle than the other breeds. Her
junior yearling, Green Brae
Jamie, got the Junior Champion
nod, while her winning aged cow,
Ann Ayr Fortune Valerie, captured
the top spot.
