UNIVERSITY PARK - Over
1,700 4-H’ers, leaders and
chaperones came to the University
Park campus of the Penn State
University this week to participate
in State 4-H Achievement Days.
At an award ceremony held
Wednesday morning, many of the
4-H’ers were recognized for the
countless hours of work they had
put into their projects. Amid loud
applause and screams of delight.

place in public speaking competition.
Grain is sold
to Africa
DALLAS, Tex. - The
U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s Com
modity Credit Cor
poration has announced
the sale of $89.4 million
worth of grain to private
exporters for resale to
African countries hard
hit by severe drought.
The sales were made
under an invitation for
offers made on June 15.
Sales were made to
private exporters on a
competitive bid basis.
The commodities were
sold in store at the
warehouse location and
the exporters will pay
all processing costs plus
the cost of tran
sportation to the im
porting country, Block
said.
CCC received bids for
585,696 metric tons of
wheat, 513,518 tons of.
com and 481,044 tons of
rough rice. The contract
awards totaled
$21,720,000 in wheat,
$36,613,865 in com and
$31,081,683 in rice based
on CCCs acquisition
cost.
Bids for wheat lots
offered by CCC ranged
from a high of $3.09 per
bushel to a low of $.Ol
per bushel. For com,
bids on lots offered by
CCC ranged from a high
of $3 per bushel to a low
of $.223 per bushel. For
rice, the bids ranged
from a high of $3.95 per
hundredweight to a low
of $.lO per hun
dredweight.

National 4-H Center.

other state. This year Penn
sylvania made its last payment in
that large pledge.

honor and a privilege to work with
the State 4-H Achievement Days.”
The 4-H’ers arrived in State
College on Monday to compete in
various project categories with
other 4-H’ers from across the
state. In between competition, they
participated in a number of other
activities, including swimimng,
dancing and ice skating.
“We really enjoy the campus,”
4-H’er Lisa Shaffer of Somerset
County said. She added that
making friends from all over
Pennsylvania is another part of the
event she especially enjoys.
