A2o —Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 11, 1984 BY LAURA ENGLAND LEBANON Adam Sonnen, a 14-year-old 4-H’er who has been showing cows for five years, had a first this year during the Lebanon Area 4-H and FFA Dairy Show Tuesday afternoon. The son of Malcolm and Jancie Sonnen, Richland, Adam showed his 4-year-old cow to the winner’s circle in the 4-H Holstein Show. It was the first grand championship for the young 4-H’er, but the glory didn’t stop there. If winning the 4-H Holstein title wasn’t enough, then the overall supreme championship put the icing on the cake for Adam and his cow. Of the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein and Jersey cattle shown, judge Creedin Cornman, Carlisle, selected Sonnen-Acres Jemini Lucre as the show’s supreme champion. The selection of the supreme champion animal was the culmination of a day-long show involving both 4-H and FFA exhibitors. Colored breed entries were shown first, followed by a full show of Holstein animals. Both the 4-H and the FFA Ayrshire shows were dominated by an 18-year-old exhibitor from Lebanon. Heather Hemley, who has a long record of show cham pionships, took the grand cham pion and reserve grand champion titles in each show. Judy Mase, a 12-year-old 4-H’er from Lebanon, won the grand championship title in Brown Swiss competition. The reserve cham pion title went to Bruce Heilinger, 16, Newmanstown, who has a herd of 20 Brown Swiss cattle. A FFA member as well, Bruce earned the grand and reserve grand championships in the FFA Brown Swiss contest. A member of the ELCO FFA Chapter, Bruce won the championship titles at the 1983 Lebanon Fair. With just three entries shown by 4-H’ers in the Guernsey class, Karen Heilinger, Newmanstown, won grand champion in her first show. The reserve title went to Christine Habecker, Annville, also showing for the first time. Runner-up to Adam Sonnen’s 4-IJ Holstein grand champion, was a cow owned by Adam’s cousin, David Sonnen, also of Richland. David’s reserve champion was shown by his sister, Becky. In FFA Holstein competition, the grand and reserve grand cham pion honors went to John Kline, Myerstown. This was John’s last time showing as a FFA member at the Lebanon Fair. Four-H Jersey grand champion honors were earned by Louise Landis, Jonestown. A three-year show veteran, this was Louise’s first championship. The reserve champion title went to Ellen Hanson, Palmyra, Lebanon County’s Dairy Princess, who was competing in her first dairy show. To make the day even more memorable, Ellen won the grand championship in the FFA Jersey Show. Ken Heisey, Newmanstown, who owns 32 head of Jerseys and Holsteins, showed the reserve champion cow. Competing individually during the class shows, the 4-H and FFA members pulled their entries together for the club herd contest. The 4-H Colored Breed winners were No-So-Ann, first, and Norlebco, second. The 4-H Holstein winners were ELCO, first; Norlebco, second; and No-So-Ann, third. The FFA Chapter herd title went to ELCO, followed by Norlebco and Annville-Cleona.
