Yorkshire and puroc Breeders
Associations held'a show and sale
at the Lebanon Fairgrounds on
July 27 and 28.
Thursday’s events included an
educational program presented by
Bill Henning, extension meats
specialist at Penn State Univer
sity. Included in this program was
a Live Animal Evaluation Contest
Several market hogs we it
presented for participants to judge
and then were scanned to deter
mine actual figures. This method
was unique from usual Live
Animal Evaluation Contests in
which participants do not see the
results for several weeks. The
animals used for this contest also
competed in the Certified Market
Hog Contest.
The agenda for Friday included
a show and sale of breeding stock.
The champion bred gilts in both
Yorkshire and Duroc competition
were exhibited by Bruce and
Charles Smith of Smith’s Hog
Farm from Washington, Penn
sylvania. The champion Duroc
sold for $3lO to Calvin Lazarus and
Sons of Whitehall. Glenn Ebersole
of Duncannon purchased the
champion Yorkshire for $3OO.
The champion Yorkshire boar, a
meaty' January boar, was con
signed by Wilson’s Yorkshires of
New Freedom. Dorsey Owings of
Millington, Maryland purchased
this boar for $250.
The champion Yorkshire open
gilt was shown by Blue Mountain
Farm of Annville. This January
24th gilt sold for $2lO to Leon Ar
nold of Lebanon.
The remainder of the cham
pionships were claimed by Calvin
Lazarus and Sons of Whitehall.
Grant Lazarus and his sons walked
away with champion Duroc boar
and open gilt honors as well as
championships in Duroc and
Yorkshire Littermate Pair com
petition. The champion York Pair
of Open Gilts were sold for $3OO to
