Garth Youngberg, executive director of the Institute for Alternative Agriculture in Grecnbelt, Md. Youngberg, who was coordinator of the USDA’s organic fanning program, will speak on Saturday, Aug. 11, on “Alternative Agriculture Prospects for the Future.” Other featured speakers during the three-day convention will be Murray Snyder on “The Macrobiotic Approach to Natural Living; John Heinerman on “Using Herbs for Major Health Problems;” Dr. Howard Lutz .on “My Experience with Chelation Therapy, 1964-1984;” Maureen Salaman, Floyd Hackman and Barbara Reed. Throughout the week guest speakers provided lectures dealing with all the above topics, as well as reptiles, birds of prey, fishing, archery and muzzleloader shooting. Field trips to the Lancaster County Park and the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area were also part of the week’s agenda. Though .thunderstorms tern porarily called a halt to Friday’s Enviro-lytnpics, students were soon back to their test stations clad in boots, ponchos in anticipation of more wet weather. The wildlife portion of the test involved wildlife identification as well as the identification of tracks, and common wildlife foods. The aquatic biology test required a knowledge of fish as well as rep tiles, amphibians and fishing regulations. Test questions in forestry in volved tree identification and dendrology, and a pit was provide for soil judging where participants were required to estimate topsoil depth, slope, texture and drainage, as well as what uses would not be appropriate for that type of soil.
