Enviro-lympics highlight Youth Conservation School

COCALICO It was a clean
sweep for the Eastern Lancaster
County School District as Garden
Spot students took top honors in all
five test categories at the county
Enviro-lympics competition on
July 27.
The contest marked the
culmination of a week of nature
study at Lancaster County’s Youth
Conservation School held at the
Northern Lancaster County
Sportsman’s Farm.
Co-sponsored by the Lancaster
County Federation of Sportsmen’s
Clubs and the County Conservation
District, the school provides en
vironmental education for Lan
caster County youths, ages 14 to 16,
who must be sponsored by a
sportsmen's club or other en
vironmental organization^.
The school’s 30 participants
divided into five groups, taking
their turns at each .of the test
stations to answer questions in the
fields of wildlife, soils, forestry,
aquatic biology and survival and
orienteering.
Sponsored by the Northeastern
Lancaster County Rod and Gun
Club, Wayne Kauffman won both
the wildlife and soils categories.
Taking top honors in forestry
and survival and orienteering were
Tony Bender and Mike Middleton,
respectively. Both were sponsored
by the New Holland Rod and Gun
Club.
Placing first in aquatic biology
was Andy Petersheim sponsored
by the Beartown Sportsmen’s
Association.
The award for outstanding
notebook was given to Roger
Weaver, sponsored by the Penn
Dutch Sportsmen’s Association,
