NEWARK, Del. - This year it is more important than ever to check for ticks on family members and pets who spend time outdoors, says University of Delaware extension entomologist Mark Graustein. Besides the familiar dog tick, a new tick, Ixodes Dammini (black legged tick) has come to Delaware, bringing with it a serious, arthritis-like ailment, Lyme disease. Last year there were four confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Delaware. Ixodes is a red-brown tick with black legs. Because it is no bigger than the head of a pin, you’ll need to use extra care when checking I UAHS l-AM GREAT INVENTORY CLOSEOUT! New tick brings additional disease threat for it. Its numbers increase throughout the fall until Decem ber. Lyme disease, first isolated in Lyme, Connecticut, can result in long-term brain and heart disor ders. It is caused when the tiny tick buries its head under the victim’s skin. The pathogen has recently been identified as a spirochete. Graustein says the best way to remove a black-legged tick is to cover it with petroleum jelly and wait for it to back out. It is dangerous to try to pull off this type of tick because the head may remain embedded and cause a bad infection. • 999 • 499 •1999 •1395 •2299 •1495 •2499 ’1295 •1000 OFF *2295 ..'«« *1049 ‘1395 *1399 *1499 *1799 933 Lititz Pike Lititz, Pa. 717-626-4765 *■■■ HANDY CLASSIFIED AD /*sj§ ORDER BLANK fJK*. One out of every five American dog ticks carries the organism that causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Despite its name, this disease is by no means limited to the Rocky Mountain region, where it was discovered in 1899. It has since spread to every state except Marne, Vermont, and Hawaii. Last year there were four confirmed cases of the disease in Delaware, and 1,000 cases nationwide. To prevent Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Graustein advises checking for ticks twice a'day when a family member or pet has been outdoors. Don’t be unduly alarmed if you find a tick, he says. Only a small percentage of all dog ticks carry the disease. And even if a family member is bitten by a carrier tick, the disease will not be transmitted until the tick has been attached to its victim for five or six hours. There are several ways to remove dog ticks from pets or word count PLEASE WRITE CLEARLY (Number of Words) humans, he says. Many times bigger than black-legged ticks, they can be removed with a slow, steady pull. Shield your fingers with a paper towel or tissue to prevent infection, and be careful not to leave the mouth parts in the skin. Wash hands with soap and water afterwards, and swab the area of the bite with an antiseptic. Another method is to grasp the tick at the mouth end with tweezers while prying it out with sewing needle. This method reduces the risk of leaving mouth parts embedded in the skin. Once you’ve removed a tick, dispose of it carefully so it can’t attach itself to someone else. Several good repellents are available, he says. Also, the Delaware State Department of Agriculture recently approved an even more effective new material that is toxic to ticks but safe for humans when used as directed. The new product, Permanone tick repellent, is unique in that it should be applied to clothing only, not to human skin or pets. Contact with treated clothing should be avoided until the insecticide, a synthetic pyrethrin, is completely dry. Permanone will soon be available through Southern States Cooperatives in Delaware.
