    CRAFT
Of all decorative knitting
techniques, cable-knitting is
probably the favorite of most
knitters.
Cables add surface texture to
sweaters. They’re also responsible
for the rich look characteristic of
hand knit sweaters.
Cable sweaters like the one
shown are ideal for today’s skirts

complete instructions, look for
details that follow this column. To
learn more about cables, just read
on.
In order to knit cables, you’ll
need a short, double-pointed cable
needle. The cable needle helps you
transfer stitches from one part of
the row to another.
In cable-knitting, basically, you
slip a group of stitches from the
left-hand needle onto the cable
needle without knitting them. You
knit the next few stitches as usual,
and then knit the stitches from the
cable needle back into the row.
By moving stitches around with
your cable needle, twisting cable
patterns eventually result. Be
patient waiting to see them,
however, because the first few
rows rarely look right.
