Wisdom of Solomon & patience of Job
To the Editor: attempts to destroy a man 9 Is
Abraham Lincoln is quoted as
saying, “To sin by silence when
you should protest makes cowards
of men.”
My Christian conscience bothers
me. I am troubled by the thought
that a misdeed is soon to be done,
or by this writing may have been
done for the sake of vengeance.
I sorrow for the Wright family of
the Bethel area of Berks County
whose foundation flocks will soon
be destroyed; I fear because he
dared resist the overzealous ef
forts of men who were empowered
with authority.
It has been demonstrated that
this flock is free of Avian Influenza
and that these birds also possess
the necessary antibodies to ward
off this dreaded disease. Were it
not far better to attempt to
determine whether this immunity
can be passed on to next
generations before a wrong is done
in haste.
Will we also destroy all the fowl
of the air in order to stop the
spread 7 Even though they are
immune, they too, can be carriers.
Or shall we do as the seed corn
growers a few years ago, quickly
breed resistant strains 7
I would prefer not to panic and
burn down all the bridges. I would
suggest to relax under the shade of
a cool tree and ponder the logic of
the situation.
Enough wrongs have already
befallen the Wright family, and
according to news accounts, this
has brought them to the brink of
bankruptcy. Why make further

their plants in recent years. The
prices are favorable. In order f o
realize the maximum yield nex 1
spring, we suggest the plants be
well fertilized this summer. An
application of 20 to 30 pounds of
actual nitrogen per acre over the
plants during July or August
should give strength to new run
ners and increase fruit yields. This
application should be made when
the plants are dry in order to avoid
burning the leaves. Ammonium
nitrate is one of the good nitrogen
fertilizers to use. In the home
garden use about one-fourth pound
of ammonium nitrate per 100
square feet of bed space. Good
care of the strawberry plants this
summer will bring about better
yields next June.

At the conference the couple will
meet with about 40 other young
farm couples selected by the
county farmers’ association
around the state to learn more
about PFA and its programs.
PFA is a voluntary, statewide
farm organization providing
members with an organized voice
in public affairs, information, and
farm services including
management, cooperative, in
surance and group purchasing
opportunities.
Duane Aurand, of Rl,
Lewistown, Mifflin County, who
serves with his wife Margy as
chairmen of PFA’s State Young
Farm Couples Committee, said,
“The conference program is
designed to assist young farm
couples who are interested in
becoming more involved in PFA
programs and the future of
agriculture. It’s these young
couples, under age 30, who will
have the most at stake in the
changes and challenges facing
agriculture in the next thirty
years”.
