Budget, awaiting Governor
Thornburgh’s signature, call for
approximately a 50 percent in
crease in research funding.
Of the total $34,311,000 allotted
for agriculture, $6lO 000 was
provided for agriculture
reasearch. This amount was an
increase of $300,000 over last yea f'.

projects include: vaccine for
Brucellosis, $150,000; Johne’s
Disease research, $15,000;
agriculture commodities
promotion, 60,000; poultry
research and promotion, $500,000;

Research funds increase
and the indemnity fund, $225,000.
Institutions to receive
agriculture funding are Penn State
University and the University of
Pennsylvania. Penn State will
receive $375,000 for avian influenza
research. This is to include the
establishment of isolation con
tainment laboratories for research
on highly contagious animal
diseases, such as avian flu.
The University of Pennsylvania
will receive $2 million for the New
Bolton Animal Health Center. The
University will also receive the
funding for Johne’s Disease,
mentioned earlier. The disease,
which has no known cure, infects
between 10 to 15 percent of the
state’s cattle.
