facilities on several farms.
Michael and Jennifer, age 10, and
Mark, age four, love to accompany
their grandparents, parents and
uncles all over the farms doing
chores.
Although Jennifer doesn’t like
chasing cows “because they
stink,” Michael says he likes the
cows the best. Little Mark helps his
grandmother feed and water the
calves. Michael also enjoys this
and says that Jennifer needs help
since they are feeding about 25
calves.
“I like to help unload straw,”
Michael says. “We help our
grandmother feed the calves and I
like to help my grandfather in the
chicken house,” he adds.
“So do I,” Mark chimes
likes to ride with his father while
baling straw, “until he gets tired of
watching the bales fly up,” his
father adds.
Michael and Jennifer will be
showing 4-H calves tor the first
time this year and look forward to
the fairs. Mark said that he will be
showing someday, but now he is
content to help his brother and
sister train theirs.
There is nothing comparable to
farm children. They have the
enthusiasm, drive, and spark m
their eyes that has made their
parents bear with the times on
their farms - farms that will
eventually belong to the children.
The Hix siblings are on their way to unload straw in another barn.
Cindy says that with Harvey caring for their calves, they do
not have to bother with them at all. Harvey enjoys taking care
of the calves and says he can easily tell when a calf is sick by
the way it looks. Younger sister, Allison, helps him.
