Wash Down-Filled Garments
With Care
Are you aware that down-filled
garments can be washed as well as
dry cleaned? If you have never
washed a down-filled garment,
please read and follow the
following directions carefully.
When washing a down-filled
garment use warm water, and a
mild soap. Never use hot water.
You can wash the item by hand
or in your automatic washing
machine on the delicate cycle.
Which ever method you use,
submerge the garment, then
squeeze it for several minutes to
make certain all the air has been
pushed out. Handle the garment
with tender loving care. Never
wring or twist it.
Proper rinsing is very im
portant. Any soap or detergent not
rinsed out will cause the down to
clump together and will reduce its
insulating ability. The weight of
wet filling can strain or tear
seams and even force the down
through the fabric. Lift it out of the
wash tub or washer very carefully.
The easiest way to dry your
down garment is in a dryer. Use a
medium heat setting. Add two or
three clean bath towels to absorb
moisture and a clean pair of tennis
shoes to break up the clumps of
down as the dryer rotates. It will
probably take several cycles to dry
the garment completely.
Be certain there is no moisture
left in the garment. Down can
mildew if it stays damp for too
long.
You can also dry a down gar
ment outdoors on a warm, dry day.
Drape it over several drying lines
to evenly distribute the weight.
Check frequently and fluff the
matted dumbs with your fingers.
Total drying time may take
several days depending on the
humidity.
How To Clean Nonstick Surfaces

three tablespoons oxygen bleach,
one teaspoon light duty liquid
detergent (used for hand dish
washing) in one cup of water; or
three tablespoons dishwasher
detergent in one cup of water.
Place one of the above solutions
in the stained pan. Place the pan on
your range. Bring the solution to
the boiling point, lower heat and
allow solution to simmer for 15 to
20 minutes. Wash the pan
thoroughly, rinse and dry.
Recondition pan before using by
rubbing nonstick surface with
cooking oil.
Avoid Food Poisoning
Summer is a time of family
picnics and outdoor fun. Keep your
food safe! Food poisoning is very
uncomfortable and can be serious.
It is usually caused by germs
allowed to multiply in warmth and
favorable culture. Foods most
likely to be affected by bacterium
are perishables like potato salad,
fruit salads with whipped cream,
milk, puddings and custards, white
sauces, sandwich spreads, and
meat and fish sandwiches.
Keen hot foods hot (above 140°
F.) and cold foods cold (below
40*F). Refrigerate foods im
mediately after meals in shallow
containers to speed the cooling
process. Do not allow foods to cool
at room temperature before you
refrigerate them.
Unclean hands or untensils may
intensify the problem of food
poisoning. Anyone or anything that
comes in contact with your food
should be clean.
