NEWARK, Del. - Caroline A.
Jones, a graduating senior
majoring in entomology at the
University of Delaware, has
received the Undergraduate
Student Award from the
Chesapeake chapter of the
American Registry of Professional
Entomologists, a branch of the
Entomological Society of America.
This is the first year the award
Graduating entomology major Caroline Jones receives
award from Ralph R. Carestia, president of Chesapeake
chapter of American Registry of Professional Entomologists.
Entomological Society honors University
has been offered to competing
students at the universities of
Maryland, Delaware and Virginia
who are interested in a career in
entomology the study of insects.
Jones received a plaque plus a
book of insect drawings. The
presentation was made by Ralph
R. Carestia, president of the
Chesapeake chapter of ARPE.
Carestia, a medical entomologist
in the U.S. Army, said his chapter
decided to offer the award in order
to strengthen the chapter’s ties
with the colleges.and universities
which are the training centers for
future entomologists.
Jones graduated with a joint
entomology/plant pathology major
and a minor in biology. Besides her
regular course work, during her
four years of undergraduate study,
Jones gained practical experience
through numerous summer jobs
assisting members of the en-

tomology and plant science
departments with their laboratory
and field research projects.
Because of her varied interests,
Caroline Jones is uncertain which
entomology-related career to
pursue, but biological illustration
is one possibility. For the present,
she plans to continue her studies in
graduate school. “Research really
interests me,” she says. “After
four years of general study, it
would be good to specialize on one

continuing that to a Ph.D.”
Ultimately she would like to work
in a research-related job where she
would have access to a laboratory
and could have creative input into
solving basic questions about in
sects and their behavior.
Before entering graduate school,
she plans to spend the summer in
Oregon. She will live in a wheat
producing area and expects to
drive grain trucks during harvest.
