ROARING SPRING - Blair
County’s dairy princess for 1984 is
Crystal Pheasant. The 16-year-old
daughter of Phillip and Gladys
Pheasant, R 2 Martinsburg, was
crowned before a crowd of 200 in
ceremonies at the Spring Cove
Area June High School on April 28.
She succeeds 1983 princess
Luella Smith. Only two contestants
competed to represent Blair
County’s large dairy industry.
Becky Greenleaf, 16, will serve as
alternate dairy princess. Becky is
the daughter of Jeanette Greenleaf
of R 1 Martinsburg and Danny
Greenleaf, of James Creek.
The two young women are
seniors at Central High School,
Martinsburg. Crystal’s family
owns 190 acres and rents 140 acres
at R 2 Martinsburg. The new
princess helps milk the 60 head of
Holsteins, assists with field work
and other farm work. A member of
the 4-H Dairy Club, she shows
cattle during the summer. Last
year the new title holder was the
Blair County representative at the
Pennsylvania Farmers
Association’s youth conference. An
outdoor enthusiast, she is
president of her school’s Outdoor
Club. Crystal is a member of the
Drama Club and Yearbook Club.
She is also chairperson of the Teen
Task Force of the Chemical
People, and is active in her church
Sunday School and Youth Group.

Crystal Pheasant is 1984 Blair County Dairy Princess
presentation, Crystal spoke to the
audience on the need of dairy
products to maintain a healthy
body.
The alternate princess, Becky
Greenleaf, owns seven Holsteins
and works on the farm of Earl
Stonerook, her grandfather. She is
a member of the Morrisons Cove 4-
H Dairy Club and the Martinsburg
Mennonite Church youth group. In
school she is a member of the
Girls’ Athletic Association and the
Future Teachers of America.
She performed a dramatic
presentation entitled Milk’s Got
More. Becky portrayed a typical
teenager learning the benefits of
milk over soft drinks.
The contestants were judged on
personal interviews, their
knowledge of the dairy industry,
their presentation on milk, and
poise and appearance. While on
stage, they each responded to
impromptu questions. The 1984
princess was asked how she would
respond if someone refused to use
dairy products because of dieting.
Miss Pheasant explained how
important it is to stay healthy
while dieting by getting the
nutrients found in dairy products.
She added that many milk
products are nutritionally good for
the number of calories. It is not
necessary to cut milk out, because
there are many lowfat milk
products.
Miss Greenleaf was asked what
she would say to.senior citizens
about their need for dairy
products. Becky said that milk is

important for all ages and that the
calcium in milk helps fight the
problem of brittle bones that often
affects older people.
The 1983 princess wished the new
title holder and alternate princess
a rewarding and fulfilling year.

expressed the need to reach out to
the public as a vital part of milk
promotion.
Judges for the pageant were Nan
Hunt, Huntingdon, of Valley Rural
Electric; Vera Foster, Globe-Run
Farms in Petersburg and Hun
tingdon County’s Dairy Princess
Program chairperson; and Robert
Pardoe, Jr., R 1 Milton. He is a
Northampton County dairy farmer
and chairman of SUN Area Dairy
Promotion Committee. Patty
Mock, R 2 Martinsburg, served as
master of ceremonies.
Entertainment for the evening
was provided by a vocal group, the
Meister Singers of Northern
Bedford High School, and a slide
show. The slide show is the newest
promotion in Blair County. It
provides a vivid explanation of the
working farm, the stages of milk
production and a look at the
beautiful farmland in the county.
There are two separate slide
shows, one for adult audiences and
the other geared to children. They

will aid the new dairy princess as
she speaks to hospitality hubs,
various women’s and men’s
organizations and school children.
Blair County’s pageant is nor
mally held in June. It is hoped that
by having the contest earlier the
new princess and the dairy
promotion committee can devote
more time to promoting milk
during June dairy month.
Crystal Pheasant will represent
Blair County in the state dairy
princess pageant in September.
A reception for the new dairy
princess was held in the school
cafeteria following the pageant.
