herd health plan provides a place
other than the stanchions in the
milking parlor to restrain cows
during treatment and routine
medical examinations.
“Milking parlor stanchions
weren’t designed for restraint and
treatment,” says University of
Delaware extension dairy
specialist Dr. George Haenlein.
“Once cows have been treated
there, they may resist entering the
parlor.
He suggests using a sorting gate
controlled from the pit to guide
cows leaving the parlor into a
catch lane. “You can hold them in
this area for treatment, hoof
trimming and medical
examinations,” the specialist says.
“Or you can move them into a pen
equipped with a self-locking
stanchion.” A stall inside a
stanchion or stall bar can also be
used as the treatment area.
Be sure to locate in-barn
treatment sites away from
neighboring cows, he advises.
“Try to pick a relatively isolated
stall next to a cross alley. This will

points,” Haenlein says. “Locate
one ring above the cow’s
shoulders, another above the tail
and a third 4 to 6 feet behind where
she’ll stand. Select rings that are
strong enough to support the cow if
she needs it.”
