Pa. 18657 Ph. 717-333-4194 Lunch commonly known as Anthracnose. It can cause twig, bud, shoot or leaf blight. Twig blight occurs in the spring before the leaves have appeared and results in the killing of the tips of 1-year-old twigs. Sunken areas known as cankers are usually formed after the twig is infected. These cankers girdle and kill the twigs. When the twigs are killed an nually the branch growth becomes gnarled and bunched, which gives the tree a “witch’s broom” look. The buds are affected as they begin to expand and die before they open fully. When the young shoots are affected it appears as a sudden dying of the expanding shoots and immature leaves. It is sometimes confused with frost damage. Larger leaves are infected directly from the fungus on the twigs and branch cankers. Small to large, irregular areas of dead tissue appear near the veins on affected leaves. The fungus then grows through the leaf stems into the twigs, where it will remain inactive until the following spring. Anthracnose is more severe in cool, wet springs. This year and last year provided perfect con ditions for the development of the disease. Tips on feeding COLLEGE PARK, Mo. Dairy cattle can sometimes be finicky at feeding time, and one reason may be the acidity of their diets. Researchers at the University of Maryland have found that animals eat better when their corn silage rations are slightly acidic between pH 5 and 6. At pH levels above and below this range, feed intake is reduced, the researchers say. The study also indicates that adding sodium bicarbonate to silage at feeding time improves feed intake and cattle per formance. The Maryland researchers compared con sumption of Holstein steers fed various com silage rations. Feed intake appeared to be linked to pH of the feedstuffs. The highest consumption rate was with com silage that had been sup plemented with sodium bicar bonate. This ration had the highest pH - 5.9. Consumption was lowest with fresh whole com plant which had been acidified to a pH of 3.6. In a second study, researchers compared intake of Holstein THE NEW COVENANT CHRIST IAN SCHOOL Benefit Auction was held June 2 at the Lebanon Area Fairgrounds, at the corner of Cornwall and Rocherty Roads. Bachman Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Jana 9,1994—A39 Normally a healthy tree can withstand two years of severe defoliation without a long term effect on the tree. Sycamores are used to some annual defoliation due to this disease. However unusual weather conditions- too wet, too dry, or too cold - have caused trees to be in a weakened condition. For example, many Chester County oak trees have died after only a single serious defoliation by the gypsy moth, when in theory they should have been able to withstand two or three years of defoliation. Protection should be considered only for a particularly valuable specimen. Control is acbeived by following a carefully timed spray schedule. The first spray goes on as the buds begin to swell, another at budbreak, and another 10 to 14 days after the second spray. In wet years like this, it may even be necessary for a fourth spray. The problem is, one has to commit to a spray program before knowing if weather conditions will be favorable for the development of the disease. A control group received silage which had no bicarb added. Again, consumption improved as pH approached neutral. However, at the highest level of bicarb, pH of the silage was slightly alkaline, andintake was reduced. “This research shows that com silage pH is a factor affecting intake, and that sodium bicar bonate added to the ration can be beneficial in keeping silage pH within an optimum range of five to six,” says Randy Shaver, who conducted the research. “Many studies have shown a response to sodium bicarbonate, and we have assumed that buf fering in the rumen has been the reason for the response,” adds Dr. Richard Erdman, assistant professor of animal science who participated in the research. “We’re interested in the possibility that bicarb may also improve palatability by keeping pH of the ration at an optimum level.” Sale Reports and Nelson Ebersole donated their services as auctioneers.
