Compared with 5803 head last week and 7036 head a Colostrum is good for calves MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Many dairy farmers have found that colostrum is an excellent and low cost source of nutrients for raising young calves. This “first milk” that cows produce after living also contains valuable antibodies that are passed on to calves. According to Dr. Donald Ot terby, animal scientist at the University of Minnesota, excess colostrum from the milking herd may be preserved, either by natural souring or by treating with acid and stored for later use. However, the acids formed during the fermentation process can reduce palatability especially during hot weather and calves may refuse to drink. Dairymen experiencing this problem may want to consider adding sodium bicarbonate, Otterby says. In a feeding trial, Minnesota YOUR AUTHORIZED M&W DEALER year ago. Bicard raised the pH level to 6.0. Consumption indicated that sodium bicarbonate improved palatability of the colostrum. During the three-week trial, calves fed acidified colostrum refused almost 50 pounds of liquid. In contrast, calves fed acid colostrum neutralized with sodium bicar bonate refused less than three pounds of liquid during the trial. “Before feeding, add bicarb at about 0.5 to 0.6 lb. per 100 pounds or about one ounce per gallon of colostrum,” he says. “But even with bicarb added, fermented or acid-preserved colostrum should not be held for extreme periods. Three to four weeks is maximum for most situations.” BALER nd Baler makes losed chamber to ss and retain valu- The closed so reduces dust mts. ;o a minimum and ;es expensive, hard place belts.
