    SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Rome is the
home of cheese. It earned this
distinction by being the site of the
first cheese factory, built in 1851.
In honor of this fact, the American
Dairy Association, in conjunction
with the Rome Department of
Tourism, is sponsoring the 4th
Annual Cheese Festival at Erie
Canal Village today and tomorrow
from 11a.m. to 5 p.m.
A number of attractions will be
available for adults as well as
children. Today, June 9, adults will

Cheese festival this weekend at Erie Canal Village
enjoy cooking demonstrations,
dairy antique displays and cheese
making demonstrations. New York
State county princesses will be
available to entertain the children
wi{h games and schoolhouse
presentations. Free samples of
New York’s cheeses will be
distributed, and door prizes will be
awarded throughout the day. At 4
p.m., a grand prize block of cheese
will be awarded.

Fiddlers to hold convention
WESTMINSTER, Md. - The
Deer Creek Fiddlers Conventions
open their thirteenth season of
bluegrass and old time string band
competitions tomorrow at the

Carroll County Farm Museum in
Westminster, Maryland. The
traditional musical show, co
sponsored by the Farm Museum,
begins at 11 a.m. and continues
until 10 p.m. In addition to the
contests on stage, there will be
dancing, picnicking, games, food,
and crafts.
Musicians are invited to register
in the competitions for bands,
fiddlers, guitars, banjos, man
dolins, bass fiddles and vocals.
Over $3,000 in prizes will be
awarded at the close of the evening
show.
The admission is $5 per person.
Children under eighteen, ac
companied by parents are ad
mitted free.
The Footloose doggers of
Washington, DC will be on hand to
present several exhibitions of clog
dancing.
Families should prepare for a
warm afternoon and perhaps a
cool evening. The stage and arena
are shaded by big maple trees.
There will be a new dance floor
under the trees.
The Carroll County Farm
Museum is located on Center
Street, on the south side of West
minster. It’s about one hours drive
from Baltimore or Washington.
