Susquehanna River Celebration on June 30

Susquehanna River and its
tributaries will play an increasing
role in the agriculture oi
southeastern Pennsylvania.
Already, the river and its
relationship to area ag is at the
heart of the Chesapeake Bay
problem. Due to this common
sphere of interest, Lancaster
Farming publishes the following
story 1 about the upcoming
Susquehanna River Celebration.)
HARRISBURG To emphasize
and observe the outstanding values
of the Susquehanna River, the
County of Dauphin and the City of
Harrisburg are co-sponsoring the
Second Annual Susquehanna River
Celebration on Saturday, June 30,
Pontoon boat rides are offered as part of the Susquehanna
River Celebration.

be the center for the celebration’s
fourty-eight participants.
At a proclamation ceremony in
Harrisburg, Dauphin County
Commissioners Jack Minnich,
Norm Hetrick and Larry
Hochendoner joined Mayor Steve
Reed to mutually proclaim June 30
as the Second Annual Susquehanna
River Celebration as the area’s
observance of Pennsylvania
Rivers Month and American
Rivers Month.
Anyone attending the River
Celebration will enjoy a day full of
family style recreation and en
tertainment. At the proclamation
ceremony at River Celebration’s

events were highlighted. Twenty
one feature events will offer
something of interest to everyone.
Exciting additions for this year’s
River Celebration include a hot air
balloon ride raffle, three
folksingers and the first annual
Susquehanna River 10,000 Meter
Race. Two river demonstrations
will offer Central Pennsylvania
some unique forms of water sports,
board sailing and rowing shells
will converge on the river to
promote these sports.
Numerous feature events from
last year will repeat themselves
for 1984. The Susquehanna Down
River Canoe Race, operated by the
Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg
and the Conewago Canoe Club, is
expected to draw canoeists from
the entire northeast coast. Hie
island to island treasure hunt,
inner tube float, historical
reinactments and nature
programs with live wildlife will
once again attract thousands this
year.
Field tents will house many
natural resource exhibits and one
tent will serve as a theater for a
dozen programs on rivers and
historical topics. Other ongoing
activities are children characters,
a water and oil color art exhibit, an
Indian artifact exhibit and
everyone’s favorite, food con
cessions.
A colorful opening ceremony will
feature a welcome by the Mayor
and County Commissioners in
cluding a twenty gun salute by
buckskin clad frontiersmen with
two hot air balloons skylining the
horizon of City Island.
