PARKESBURG - In horse
racing, the Triple Crown means a
win at the Kentucky Derby, the
Preakness and Belmont.
But among breeders of black
beef the race for the Triple begins
in Louisville with the American
Angus Breeders Futurity in
August. Aspirants again return to
Louisville in November for the
North American International
Livestock Exposition, and a final
win at Denver’s National Western

Stock Show in January clinches the
crown.
For most Angus breeders the
Triple Crown is a once-in-a
lifetime goal, but thanks to
Krueger’s Scaara, Greg Krueger
of Fairview Farm is already
working toward his second win. A
Sayre Patriot daughter, Scaara
swept the three events during the
1981-82 show season.
Greg’s involvement with Angus
cattle began with the 4-H program
and his father’s Indiana dairy
farm. By the time the young
cattleman was 16, the family had
sold its dairy herd in favor of beef
cattle.
After high school, Greg pursued
his interest in beef, earning a B.S.
in animal science at Purdue in
1974, and completing his Masters
program three years later.
Following graduation, Krueger
became assistant manager for

Jim Evans. As head of the embryo
transfer division of the University
of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton

Sayre Farms when the prominent
Angus farm decided to sell its cow

Evans had a proposition for his
friend, Greg Krueger. Why not
pool their talents, offering embryo
transfers while at the same time
developing a championship Angus
herd? Krueger liked the idea and
Genetics Unlimited of West Grove

The firm handles about 1,000 to
1,200 pregnancies a year, made up
of about 60 percent beef cattle and
40 percent dairy animals, with
Holsteins used as recipient cows
for the embryos.

admittedly been “tough here in the
East,” according to Krueger, the
Angus breeder sees a bright future
for the female market, due, in
part, to embryo transfer
technology.
Krueger cites the ability to
freeze large numbers of embryos
as a great advantage to cattlemen,
and points out that ET technicians
are currently able to split the
fertilized egg, producing two off
spring from a single egg.
With the veterinary staff and
three technicians handling embryo
transfer responsibilities, Krueger
manages the company’s beef
operations at his 33 acre farm
located nine miles west of West
Chester.
