E24—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, June 2,1984 Lopes care NEWARK, Del. - A bad cantaloupe is a bitter disappointment. Poor flavor is usually due to a nutrient im balance or deficiency, says University of Delaware extension agricultural agent Derby Walker. Nutrients may be lacking in the soil or unavailable to plants because of stress. To grow cantaloupes that live up to your sweet expectations, lime the soil so it’s only slightly acid. On the sandy soils of southern Delaware, aim for a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. On the heavier soils of New Castle County, pH may need to be as high as 7.0. For disease resistance, cantaloupes need more potassium than nitrogen, Walker Says. Use a fertilizer such as 5-IWO, 5-10-15, or 8-10-10, (The numbers represent the ratio of nitrogen to potassium to phosphorous in the formulation.) Poor flavor is sometimes due to a lack of magnesium or boron. If this is the case, Walker says to spray the foliage with a mixture of three tablespoons Epsom salts and one tablespoon borax per gallon of water. Spray when the vines begin to run, and again when the early fruit is one to two inches in diameter. Combine the mixture with a fungicide spray if you wish. Bees spend their mornings gathering pollen from flowers. As they go from one can taloupe flower to the next, they provide free cross pollination ser vices, without which there could be no fruit. So if you spray your cantaloupes with in secticides, do it in the late afternoon or evening when the bees have gone home and won’t be affected. If you apply fertilizer properly, dont over water, and wait until your cantaloupes are ready for harvest, the fruit should be succulent and sweet.
