Management more SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Dairylea President Clyde E. Rutherford, speaking to a group of Dairylea Young Fanners recently, warned against getting “wedded to bricks and mortar.” Processing plants ‘ are necessary tools, he said, but good management is far more important. Rutherford pointed out that the number of dairy plants of all types in New York State has declined from 1,067 in 1967 to only 181 in 1984 - a drop'of 83 percent in 20 years. “You might think from those figures that we have a serious shortage of milk processing plants FS 80E STOLTZFUS WOODWORK A & B SALES & SERVICE RD Gap PA Box 183 1 Mile North Rt 897 From Gap WES STAUFFER SALES & SERVICE RD3 Ephrata PA Phone (717) 738 4215 Ephrata Exit New Rt 222 •/> Mile West on Rt 322 Turn left onto Pleasant Valley Rd THE WORLD’S LARGEST SELLING CHAIN SAW in this state,” said the Dairylea president. “The truth is that there is still too much processing capacity for most months of the year. Industrywide in New York State we’re packaging and manufacturing some 11 billion pounds of milk annually ... which is only ten percent more than we were handling in 1964! ” Advances in processing and packaging technology and long distance milk transport are the primary reasons for the tremendous decline in the number of plants, Rutherford said. Today the modern machines fill about a 90 a minute. Half pint machines fill 200 a minute, more than twice the rate of 20 years ago. “In 1964, a manufacturing plant was hard pressed to handle 500,000 pounds of milk in a day, he said. Today we have plants that can handle two million pounds or more per day.” With such advances, Rutherford said, “it is not surprising that during the 20 years since 1964, the number of fluid processing plants in the state has dropped by 86 percent (from 691 to 96) “and the end is not in sight. There are still more fluid packaging plants in the state than are needed. The result in L t . ii i i • Liquid Manure Pumps 4 In 111 I r . We should judge our cooperative by its management, not by what plants or how many plants it owns. 10’ *B.BO 4x6 6x6 #4O 0 l *159" W 3 “Never be wedded to bricks and mortar. The meaning of our experience is very clear: next to a loyal and involved mem bership, a good, forward looking, experienced management is the single most important ingredient for co-op success.” AVAILABLE All Natural New York State Cheddar Cheese or higher Moisture Cheese Like Longhorn or Colby 42 Lb.
