The team took first place in
horticulture judging and second in
both technical knowledge and
plant identification to finish
runner-up to Kirkwood Community
College, loKra.
Individually, Ploss took third
high individual honors, Velzy
fourth, Johnson fifth, and Pr
zybycien 10th. Velzy and Ploss are
seniors in the landscape
development curriculum, while
Przybycien is a freshman in
floriculture production and
Johnson a freshman in floriculture
merchandising.
Alfred also entered three other
teams in the national contests.
In soils judging, Alfred placed
fifth with a team of Steve Spalla of
Albion, Jim Van Buskirk of
Caneadea, Daniel Klein of North
Bellmore Rhoda Knowlton of
Coudersport, Pa. Knowlton led
Alfred with an 11th overall finish,
while Klein was 12th for coach
John Brown’s team.
In livestock judging, Alfred
finished 10th. Coached bv Lee
Laßochelle, the team was com
prised of Doug Mitchell of Hamlin,
Tony Stang of Perrysburg, Don
Thompson of Ulysses, Pa., Martin
Layden of Forest Hillsf and Mark
Stoltman of Conesus.

Horticulture Judging Team placed second in the recent
National Association of College Teachers of Agriculture
contest in Waterloo, lowa. Posing with plaques earned for
their runner-up finish are, from left, Adrienne Ploss of R 2
Mayville, Diane Velzy of Lawtons, Steve Przybycien of
Sheridan, coach Shannen Ferry of the faculty, and Rodney
Johnson of R 3 Dansville. Alfred entered the horticulture
phase of the nationals for the first time this spring.
