At harvesttime, 4-H wiL
award prizes in several categories
for the best pumpkins. Scone 4-H
clubs will decorate their pumpkins
and take them to nursing homes as
a community service project.
Youngsters need not belong to a
4-H club to participate in the
pumpkin growing project, but
Delaware extension 4-H agents
hope many will decide to join as a
result of the experience. A youth
organization sponsored by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture and the
University of Delaware
Cooperative Extension Service, 4-
H is open to all youngsters between
the ages of nine and 19 regardless
of race, color, sex, or handicap. No
uniform is required, and costs are
minimal. Clubs are located in
urban, rural, and suburban areas
throughout the state.
The organization has a leam-by
doing philosophy. Youngsters
choose projects that interest them
from a long list that includes
gardening, cooking, sewing,
woodworking, photography,
computer science and bicycle
safety. Leadership is supplied by
adult volunteers with support from
professional staff members at the
University of Delaware and county
extension offices. For further
information about joining 4-H or
becoming an adult volunteer,
contact the county extension office
in Newark, (451-8965), Dover (736-
1448) or Georgetown (856-5250).
