State makes additional donated food available
HARRISBURG - The Penn
sylvania Department of
Agriculture has announced that a
total of $640,526 in residual USDA
donated foods will be made
available to the state’s needy
families through existing
distribution networks for inclusion
in emergency food boxes during
the coming weeks.
State Agriculture Secretary
Penrose Hallowell said today, “We
have sought and received approval
from jthe Pood and Nutrition
Service ul the U.S. Department of
Agriculture to make these ad
ditional commodities available
through the state’s traditional
emergency feeding network. ’ ’
These commodities were
originally slated for use in the Title
I Congregate Feeding Program.

proval to reallocate these food-

Hallowell said that the com
modities, which include canned
pork, poultry, salmon, tuna, beef
and grapefruit, could serve as
many as 93,000 families per month
through the emergency food box
system now being used. The
commodities are presently stored
in ten warehouses under contract
to the Department and are in the
process of being released for
distribution.
Hallowell said the Department
will continue to monitor in
ventories and make appropriate
redistributions if additional
residuals of Title I foods are
realized.
