Helping his orchards
Lerew orchard stands immediately next to woodland being
managed under Tree Farm Program. Improvement cutting in
woodland will reduce shade on orchard and openess will help
discourage deer from entering orchard. Lloyd E. Lerew holds
doctorate in ag engineering from Michigan State.

compl
his maximum return from the
woodland is a Forest Management
Plan prepared by Tom Wieland,
Tree Farm Family Forester for
the Glatfelter Pulp Wood Co.,
Spring Grove.
The Lerew farm officially is
Glatfelter Tree Farm Family No.
57. This past winter, Lerew and his
orchard crews selectively har
vested the first seven-acre section
of those 103 acres of woodland. It
contained good quality hickory,
ash, yellow poplar and mixed oak.
But before the work actually
began, forester. Wieland in
ventoried the entire woodland,
dividing it into 10 different stands,
preparing a management plan that
told Lerew actually what he had in
the way of types of timber and
steps that should be followed in its
management to get the most out of
it.
“In this first area, we’ve
selectively cut and thinned out the
weed trees and the less desirable
timber, retaining the genetically
best trees with the most potential
value,” Wieland said.
“The thinning lets in the sunlight
and removes the competition for
nutrients, permitting the
remaining better treees to grow
even faster, increasing their value,
and allow space and conditions for
regrowth.”
