Snythetic amino acid market expands
SCHAUMBERG, 11. Expected
growth in world population and
increased animal production to
meet the larger nutritional need
will lead to expanded markets for
manufactured feed and synthetic
amino acids, said a leading animal
nutritionist here today.
Speaking at the National Feed
Ingredients Association 1984 Feed
Institute, G. Lynn Romoser,
market development manager for
Monsanto, said increased future
consumption of poultry and pork
will result from world population
that' is growing at a rate of 2.0
percent annually on a compounded
basis. Most of this expansion will
come from the developing regions
of Central and South America,
Asia, Africa and the Middle East,
as well as such centrally-planned
countries as China, the Soviet
Union and other communist bloc
countries, he added.
“On a worldwide basis, total
consumption of poultry is expected
to increase over 30 percent in the
next decade, while pork con
sumption will increase by about 16
percent,” he said. To fill this
demand, poultry production is
projected to increased by 54
percent and pork production by 34
percent in developing countries
alone, he added.
More manufactured feed will be
required to support this increased
animal production. This will mean
continued burgeoning markets,
especially export, for major
sources of synthetic methionine
and lysine.

The domestic requirement for
synthetic methionine sources, such
as and Alimet, a liquid methionine
source from Monsanto, and D, L
methionine, continues to grow at a
steady 5 to 8 percent clip, Romoser
explained. The export market is
much larger than the U.S.,
however, and demand worldwide
is expected to maintain a 7 to 9
percent annual growth rate. By
1990, he added, aggregate demand
for synthetic methionine will ex
ceed 500 million pounds if it con
tinues to rise at anticipated levels.
Lysine, the other commercial
amino acid, did hot gam significant
use until the 19705. Since that time,
MILFORD, Ind. Poultry
producers can now have more
uniform air movement throughout
their poultry houses with Chore-
Time’s newly introduced
Oscillating Fan System.
“Chore-Time's new system
oscillates all the fans in a house to
cool a larger area, which keeps the
birds uniformly spread within the
house,” says Bob Krevinghaus,

its use in the United States has
steadily increased, though more
erratically than methionine,
Romoser pointed out. With the first
domestic production plant now on
stream and another announced,
however, lysine prices should
decline, and its use in poultry and
swine feeds expand, he added.
Lysine and methionine are of
major importance to economically
meet the nutritional requirements
of poutrly and swine. “It is these
species the most efficient
converters of feedstuffs to human
food that are expected to meet
the major demands for animal
protein in an expanding worldwide
economy,” he noted.
