MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Har
nessing your tractor’s horsepower
with front-wheel-drive and radial
tires is the subject of a handy new
12-page booklet, “Make Your
Tractor More Productive,”
published recently by Allis-
Chalmers.
In tests conducted by Allis-
Chalmers in cooperation with
Armstrong Rubber Company using
170-PTO-hp 8070 tractors, the
agricultural radial tires demon
strated better traction, more
horsepower converted to working
horsepower, improved flotation,
less soil compaction and greater
operator comfort.
In unplowed soil, front-wheel
drive tractors with radial tires
covered 5.2 percent more ground
than those with bias ply tires. In

Pressure-Treated Lumber
Wolmanized pressure-treated wood and Outdoor
wood have built-in chemical protection that provides
resistance to decay and termites. This material has
been pressure-impregnated with Koppers Wolman&
CCA wood preservative which meets or exceeds
federal, state and industry specifications for this type
of wood preservative. The chemicals are fixed in the
wood and, although toxic to termites and fungi, they
are not present in sufficient quantity to be toxic to
animals.

disked soil, the difference was 5.9
percent.
The tests demonstrated that
tractors with radial tires can cover
more ground than those with bias
ply tires. There were other
benefits, too. The 15 percent
greater tread depth on the radials
plus new rubber compounds can
result in reduced weelskip and up
to 30 percent more tread life.
In addition, recent tests at North
Dakota State University show that
agricultural radials improve
tractor fuel economy by a margin
of some 4 cents per acre.
