Master Mix

EPHRATA In its 50th year,
Master Mix feeds is trying to put
more milk into the American diet.
During the months of May and
June, the Indiana-based feed
company is donating one dollar to
the promotion of dairy products for
every ton of their dairy feed sold.
The “Buck-A-Ton” promotion will
be split with 50 cents going to the
United Dairy Industry Association
and the remainder to the farmer’s
local dairy association.

Master Mix - to national and local dairy associations for each ton of dairy feed sold during

Pat Baumann, the Master Mix
representative for southeastern
Pennsylvania and southern New
Jersey, was quick to point out that
the donated money will come
directly from Central Soya
Master Mix’s parent company. “
In the last year our company has
been able to effect some savings,”
he explained, “so in addition to
some recent price reductions, we
are putting some of those savings
back into the industry.”

noted that June is National Dairy
Month, Master Mix is 50 years old
and this is their way of helping the
dairy industry.
“There has to be some emphasis
placed on promoting milk to help
out the farmers,” indicated Ken
Sensenig, owner of the Ephrata
feed operation. He called product
merchandising absolutely
necessary to the survival of the
dairy industry in America.

mixes to their list of control options
this year.
Banvel herbicide can now be
tank mixed with Sencor and Glean,
and offers improved weed control
at a competitive price, according
to Bart Brinkman, Product
Development field manager tor
Velsicol Chemical Corporation.
Banvel/Sencor can be used on
fall seeded wheat and controls
many broadleaf weeds, including
cheatgrass and downy brome.
Banvel complements Sencor with
its good broadleaf weed control.
Banvel/Glean gives dependable
control of Russian thistle, kochia,
knotweed and wild buckwheat plus
many other winter annual
broadleaf weeds often found in
northwestern states and in the
Northern Plains.
“Banvel/Glean improves overall
weed control. It gives growers a
broader spectrum of control than
Glean alone or other tank mixes.
By adding Banvel, which costs
about $1.50/acre, you have ‘in
surance’ that your weed control
program will work,” says
Brinkman.
He stresses this tank mix must
be used when wheat follows wheat.
Glean is a residual herbicide and it
may persist in the soil up to 2 years
or longer, depending on conditions.
It stays active longer in low

Banvel/Glean should be applied
early, according to Brinkman.
“The earlier the better. Spray
when weeds have just emerged
and you’ll eliminate the weeds
when they are most vulnerable and
before they compete with the
wheat.”
Banvel/Glean is labeled for use
on wheat and barley. Apply the
combination on spring seeded
wheat and barley before the 5-leaf
stage and at the 3-leaf stage
respectively. Apply Banvel/Glean
on fall seeded wheat or barley
before the crop reaches the join
ting stage.
Banvel/Sencor is labeled for use
on fall-seeded wheat and will be
used mainly by growers in the
northwest states who need broad
spectrum control. “This tank mix
controls a lot of winter annuals,”
Brinkman says. Banvel/Sencor
mix may be applied on fall-seeded
wheat before the jointing stage.
With either of the new mixes,
users should read and follow all
label directions of the respective
products involved. ■
