Pesticides require protective equipment NEWARK, Del. “Failure to wear safety equipment is probably the most common cause pf poisoning among adults who use pesticides,” says University of Delaware extension safety specialist Ron Jester. For this reason, he advises farmers and others who use toxic chemicals to make sure they’re properly protected at all times. “Always check the label to determine what kind of protection you need when using a particular pesticide,” he says. “And always wear at least a minimal level of protective clothing whenever handling these materials in order to reduce the risk of poisoning. ” This “minimal level” should include: a nonabsorbent hat, chemical gloves with the cuffs turned up, rubber boots, a long sleeved shirt worn outside of the gloves, and long pants. A preferable alternative to the shirt and pants is disposable pesticide overalls. (These should be available from local safety equipment dealers.) For increased protection wear chemical goggles, an approved (MESA or NIOSH) respirator, rubber apron, chemical suit and face shield. “Always follow label advice on protective clothing, but remember that failure to mention a respirator, for example, doesn’t rule out the need for it,” the specialist says. “No safety recommendation can cover all situations. Your common sense and knowledge of pesticide toxicity should help you assess the hazard and select the protection you need.” Wearing the wrong clothing items could be worse than no protection at all, he adds. Baseball caps, for example, can become contaiminated by chemicals and in turn contaminate your scalp. Because they’re absorbent, con taminated leather gloves and boots can also become a constant source of exposure. “Wearing leather boots or gloves when applying pesticides is about the same as soaking your hands and feet in a bucket of the mix ture,” Jester says. For maximum protection, protective clothing must be maintained properly. Wash goggles, hats, gloves and boots HOGS DON’T HAVE TO BE SLOPPY EATERS SOLUTION! Clean and disinfect respirators daily, and replace cartridges at recom mended intervals or whenever chemicals can be smelled with the respirator in place. Replace protective items when they become damaged. Launder protective clothing after each use. Don’t wear the same garment more than once without washing. And don’t wash contaminated clothing with the rest of the family’s laundry since it’s possible to contaminate the entire load of clothes. Dairymen allocates $17.5 million in equity to members BALTIMORE, MD. - Dairy farmers who market their milk through Dairymen Inc., a 17-state regional milk marketing cooperative, were allocated $17.5 million of equity May 1. Approximately 9,700 equity checks were mailed this week and represented 20 percent of mem bers’ total equity allocation. The other 80 percent was invested in the Cooperative’s Revolving Equity Program. It has been the Cooperative’s practice to revolve this equity investment on a five (5) year cycle. The equity fund serves as the financial base for Dairymen and allows for the operation for its total milk marketing program. The equity allocation to mem bers was made at the rate of 25.8 cents per 100 pounds of milk marketed through the Cooperative U After washing pesticide contaminated clothing, clean the . washing machine by running it a second time with detergent, but no clothes. Then, to be doubly safe, wipe out the tub with isopropyl alcohol. “Recent' research at the University of Nebraska indicates that clothing contaminated with highly toxic concentrated pesticides especially emulsifiable concentrates should be burned or buried because laundering is simply not effective and creates other potential hazards,” Jester con cludes. during fiscal year 1983. The 20 percent allocation was paid to the membership in cash. Dairymen is one of the few cooperatives in the nation to revolve its member equity in such a short period of time, five years. Because of its strong financial position, the organization has maintained a “AA” credit rating on its senior debt by Standard & Poor’s. Dairymen markets ap proximately 70 percent of its members’ milk to processors of milk and dairy products in the east and southeast United States. The remaining 30 percent of is sold through the cooperative’s brand name products, Flav-O-Rich and Farm Best. Farm Best is ultra high temperature (UHT) long shelf-life milk.
