2-year agronomy programs rate well
UNIVERSITY PARK -
Graduates of two-year college
programs in agronomy are
generally satisfied with their
courses and employment, judging
from a study carried out in the
College of Agriculture at Penn
State.
The project crossed state bor
ders, involving surveys among
graduates of two-year agronomy
programs at the agricultural and
technical colleges of Cobleskill and
Morrisville, N.Y. Conducting the
research as a phase of his doctoral
degree work was Douglas M.
Goodale of the Cobleskill faculty.
All two-year agronomy
graduates of the two colleges from
1977 to 1981 were surveyed by mail
to determine their satisfaction
with careers and college courses.
The research was carried out as
part of a Penn State agricultural
Experiment project to identify
benefits of two-year, associate
degree programs.
Fifty-three percent of the
graduates indicated they were

graduation, it took most graduates
about one to IVz weeks after
graduation to find employment.
Twenty-nine distinctly different
occupations were listed by the
graduates. Job titles occurring
most often were managers, non
farm laborers, technicians,
assistant managers, farm
laborers, salesmen, and farm
operators. About half of the
graduates and changed jobs during
the time period studied. In their
present work, 43 percent had the
same job titles as in their first
employment.
Most indicated they were
somewhat satisfied or highly
satisfied with their present work.
Of those working directly in
agronomy, 50 percent were
satisfied with their employment.
Moreover, 53 percent of those
working in jobs not related to
agronomy were also satisfied.
In rating their opportunities for
promotion, 53 percent were
somewhat satisfied or highly
satisfied with opportunities.
