There is something very special
about a project that is shared.
Whether it is one person or a dozen
with whom you share, there is joy
in doing it together. The following
is information on a project we are
starting in our church. It will work
for any group.
Block by block we are making a
quilt. This quilt, when finished, will
be raffled off to some very lucky
person.
Each member of the group will
make one or more blocks using her
own scraps and embroidering her
name in the corner of each block.
The group is furnishing the fabric
and the batting which will be pre
cut and ready to go.

As do all major projects, this one
needs a few guidelines:
Select a quilt pattern that
features blocks that can be
finished individually rather than
assembled and finished. Select a
pattern that is not too intricate, so
that even the beginner can handle
it. For the backing choose a
neutral color such as ecru.
Make a list of requirements to go
along with each block so that the
blocks will be uniform. For
example, the type fabric to use (we
suggested polyester-cotton, which
is easy to find); what type thread
to use; the finished size of each
block) and a deadline for having
the blocks finished.

Youths to attend Washington program
DOYLESTOWN - Nearly 5,600
teenage 4-H members are ex
pected to travel to Washington
D.C. this summer to participate in
one of the Cooperative Extension
Service’s most exciting programs
Citizenship-Washington Focus.
Forty-five 4-H members from
Pennsylvania will participate in
the program. Among them will be
David Montgomery, Doylestown;
and Natalie Wagner and Samuel
Zearfoss, Lebanon County.
The program includes visits to
Capitol Hill where the 4-H’ers will
see government in action. Many
will have an opportunity to meet
their senators and representatives
to discuss problems and possible
solutions to real-life concerns
If possible, assemble the quilt as
the blocks are turned in. This will
keep the work moving and will give
the group a sense of ac
complishment.
Keep a listing of those who have
been assigned blocks. You want to
know how many blocks to expect
and you don’t want to forget
anyone when you gather up all the
work. Be realistic about a
deadline. This is not an overnight
project, but one that takes several
months.
Good luck.
