    Bull tops Waverly Farm sale

CLEARBROOK, VA. - Buyers
from 14 states, ranging from
Massachusetts to Texas, bid to
take home some of the top Jerseys
m the nation at the Fifth Waverly
Farm Invitational Sale April 30 in
Clearbrook, Va. When the dust
cleared, the 45 top pedigreed in
dividuals commanded an average
of $1894. Hosted by the Robert
Stiles family, Waverly Farm, the
sale featured high indexing
animals from top herds across the
country.
Each consignment was personal
ly selected by a member of the
Stiles family or a representative of
the American Jersey Cattle Club.
One bull was picked to sell, and
several outstanding heifers were
consigned.
Selling for $7,500 was Mayfield
Blossom Favorite-ET, a bull bred
and owned by Mayfield Dairy
Farm, Athens, TN. Noba, Inc, Tif
fin, Oh., plus a syndicate of Jersey
breeders, were the successful bid
ders on this maternal brother to
two of the highest bulls in the breed
currently in active service. The
bull’s sire is Favorite Saint with a
PD of +624M. He also boasts a

records to her credit. His dam is an
excellent - 92% and the dam of
Mayfield Volunteer with ABS,
Mayfield Volunteer Bruce with
Select Sires, and Jodys Noble Sur
ville with Noba. A maternal sister,
Quicksilver Cherry Blossom-ET
was scored excellent 90% at two
years of age. The granddam of the
bull also has hall of fame records
to her credit and an appraisal
score of 95%.
“They were impressed with the
maternal line and the production
that was there,” stated Janet Stiles
about the high selling cow of the
sale. Blaisdell HL Earl Michele, an
Earl daughter out of an excellent
Samson, commanded the high bid
of $5,100.00 to top the sale as high
selling cow. Consigned by Jane
Blaisdell, Randolph, Vt,
“Michele” had been selected for
the sale by Paul and Blair Stiles.
Impressed by the cow ever since,
the Stiles family and Dr. Joseph
Lineweaver, and Dr. Ray Murley,
both of Blacksburg, purchased the
cow. Their syndicate, WF/L&M
Syndicate owns several other top
pedigreed individuals including
Quicksilvers Babe, currently the
high cow on the CPI list for the

breed.
“She is an appealing cow to look
at,” states Mike Stiles. With AI in
terest already on the cows, the syn
dicate looks forward to planned
matings on “Michele”. Recently
scored excellent, “Michele” might
also face the showring, according
to Stiles.
Lineweaver, a, veterinarian in
embryo transfer work, and
Murley, a retired professor from
VPI, joined with Waverly to invest
in top pedigreed individuals as
potential bull mothers. They chose
the second high selling female of
the day to add to their list when the
WF/L & M Syndicate bid $4200.00
on Rocky Hill TB Gingles. A
daughter of A-Nine Top Brass,
Gingles was consigned by W.T.
Howell, Fort Payne, Ala. Her dam,
a Quicksilver daughter boasted
3-03 305 20,230 M 5.1% and 1,033 F,
4.4% protein,
protein.
Volume buyer of the day was
E.A. Terrell and sons who selected
12 head for a total of $14,700.00. A
Holstein breeder from Virginia
who is adding to his herd with
Jerseys, Terrell returned to this
sale after purchasing several last
year.

discovery in the strawberry fields
and orchards of southern York
County on June 9 from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Rain date is June 16.
Luscious ripe strawberries, the
first fruits of the season, will be
available for purchase or on a
“Pick-Your-Own” basis. Free
tours of the orchards and
strawberry fields on farm wagons
will begin at 9 a.m. and continue

festival to greet the children. Pony
rides and a “Petting Zoo” will be
provided by local 4-H clubs for the
youngsters enjoyment.
