fectiveness “every time I use it” is
the characteristic farmers want
more than any other when using a
non-selective contact herbicide,
according to a national survey
commissioned by Chevron
Chemical Company.
The survey, which was con
ducted by Starch INRA Hooper,
Inc., public opinion research
company, drew a sample from a
larger survey of farmers
nationwide, including many in
Pennsylvania. The purpose was to
determine how much growers
know about contact herbicides,
and why they select the ones they
do. According to Starch resear

Herbicide survey queries no-tillers
enough to be considered
statistically reliable for no-till
farmers as a whole.
No-till farmers were probed in
depth for their opinions, as they
are primary users of contact
herbicides. Growers were asked to
rank attributes of contact her
bicides on a scale of one to five,
with “1” meaning “not important
at all” and “5” meaning “ab
solutely vital.” On this scale, the
surveyed growers gave “ef
fectively every time I use it” a 4.70
average raing.
The study also zeroed in on at
titudes toward three major non
selective contact herbicides
Ortho Paraquat Plus, Roundup
and Bronco. In terms of ef-
tractor aid
get a read-out, how that data will
help in running the tractor ef
ficiently, and what warning
features are built into the system.
Each button function is
described in a similar way. Along
with engine RPM, other buttons
described on the chart are PTO
RPM, area/done, timer control
and hydraulic/transmission
filters.
Three methods are listed for
programming tire size, with
necessary tire sizes and program
numbers listed on charts. Ad

Paraquat ahead of either Roundup
or Bronco. In established no-till
areas, which included Penn
sylvania, 70% of the growers rated
Paraquat as “excellent” or “very
good” in this regard, compared to
55% for Roundup and 36% for
Bronco.
The ability to kill perennial
weeds was the second most
desirable trait of a contact her
bicide, according to the survey. In
this case, Roundup ranked highest,
Paraquat ranked second and
Bronco ranked third.
Growers also want to see visible
results shortly after application,
according to the survey, as this
characteristic ranked third on the
list. Paraquat received the highest
marks in terms of visible results,
with 88% of the respondents

good.” Fifty-six percent of the
growers put Roundup in this
category, and 37% said the same
for Bronco.
The ability to mix a contact
herbicide with a variety of residual
herbicides also ranked high in
importance. Eighty-six percent of
the growers rated Paraquat
“excellent” or “very good” in this
respect, 48% did so for Roundup,
and 40% so described Bronco.
Product price is important to
growers, though surprisingly, the
growers surveyed placed price
considerations well down on the
list of attributes that affect their
purchasing decision.
Forty-nine percent scored
Paraquat as “excellent” or “very
good” in terms of price, 18% put
Roundup in this category, and 13%
felt this way about Bronco.
The survey considered
established no-till areas to be
Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland,
Tennessee, Virginia and Penn
sylvania. It also covered areas of
the Midwest and Midsouth where
no-tillage is not as well
established.
In terms of past product usage,
96% of the eastern farmers have
purchased Paraquat, 84% have
purchased Roundup and 28% have
bought Bronco. While not all
growers had made their pur
chasing decisions for 1984 at the
time of the survey, 75% indicated
they plan to purchase Paraquat,
24% said they will use Roundup,
and 16% will try Bronco.
For the eastern farmers sur
veyed, the mean or average
number of no-till areas farmed as
196. The average number of years
the respondents have farmed no
till was 8.71.
