May 12.
Bluegrass Cardinals to perforin
LANCASTER The Bluegrass
Cardinals will appear at the
Guernsey Bam for the first time on
Saturday, May 12 along with the
Lewis Family.
The Bluegrass Cardinals
originated in early 1974 when
Kentucky native Don Parmley
organized the group in Los
Angeles, along with son David,
who was then 15.
At that time Don was working on
the set of the long-running
“Beverly Hillbillies” CBS-TV
series. He played the background
banjo music during the last nine
years of the show’s filming. In 1976
the group decided to move their
base to Virginia, closer to the
greater potential bookings in the
eastern states.

west coast, the group was honored
with the opportunity to give a
concert at the White House for the
president and his guests.
Th( group’s roots go back to a
Saturday night in 1945 when Bill
Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl
Scruggs got together for the first
time in Nashville’s Ryman
Auditorium to combine their
talents and for the nucleus of the
first band to perform bluegrass
musit.
During the following decade, a
half dozen or more groups followed
their lead to gain national
recognition. Although Lester Flatt
died in 1979, the majority of those
“pioneer” artists remain active
after more than 30 years in the
business.
