Pequea Valley FFA presents chapter awards at banquet BY DICK ANGLESTEIN INTERCOURSE - Parents, friends and supporters of the Pequea Valley FFA gathered Thursday, April 26, at the Plam and Fancy Restaurant, In tercourse, for the chapter’s annual awards banquet. Postponed from March 29 due to the spring snowstorm, the banquet featured the presentation of awards to those chapter members who excelled, in various activities during the past year. Leading the list of award win ners were the chapter’s three“stars.” They include Mike Raum, Star Greenhand; Michael Hershey, Star Chapter Farmer; and Ed McQueen, Star Chapter Agribusinessman. Warren Hills FFA holds banquet WASHINGTON, N.J. - The Warren Hills N.J. annual FFA banquet was held April 14, at the Washington Municipal Hall. Greenhand awards were presented by Tim Yurkovitch to first year members in FFA. There was a total of 14 greenhands. Star Greenhand Award was presented by Krista Watters to Tina Santuu for being the “most involved” first-year member. Chapter Farmer Awards were presented by Rich Yurkovitch. This degree was given to 12 second year members in FFA. Jay Steele presented the Star Chapter Far mer Award to Tim Yurkovitch for being the “most involved” second year member. Rich Yurkovitch and Lee Curto presented Proficiency Awards. First place Proficiency Award winners were: Beef Proficiency, Jay Steele; Ag. Mechanics, Rich Yurkovitch: Home and farmstead improvement, Rich Yurkovitch; Forest Management, Chris Fournier; Dairy Proficiency, Mark Allen; Horse Proficiency, Sue Kuzmiskas; Poultry Proficiency, Lee Curto; Placement in Ag. production, John Whitmore; Placement in sales and service, Patty Rupell, Floriculture Proficiency, Patty Rupell. Scholarship Awards were presented by Chris Fournier. These awards were given to An thony Mazzarella for most im proved grades and to Patty Rupell for maintaining high grades. Public Speaking Awards were presented by Krista Watters and Lee Curto. Two of the major activities of the chapter during the year are the Fall Harvest Safety Program and the annual sale of citrus fruits. The top three participants in the safety program, which included contacts at 102 farms and 52 places of business and the distribution of 1800 stickers for machinery and 700 safety reminder cards, were Steve Hershey, first; Lennie Martin Jr., second; and Wes Cramer, third. In citrus sales, Martin was the fed Paul Sigler presented Louis Spann a Fruit Award for being the chapters highest salesman for citrus fruit. Laurie Smith was presented the Dekalb Award for being the chapters most outstanding senior. National FFA advisor named ALEXANDRIA, Va. - In twenty-four years Larry D. Case has gone from an FFA chapter president o the Future Farmers of America’s highest, non-member office National Advisor. Case, 40, fills the office left by last year’s retirement of Bryon F. Rawls. Thaine D. McCormick, of the United States Department of Education, served as Acting Senior Program Officer of Vocational Agriculture Education and National FFA Advisor during the interim. Case will assume the respon sibilities of Senior Education Program Specialist for Agriculture, Agribusiness and Natural Resources Occupations in the U.S. Department of Education and National FFA Advisor on May 29. “I’m excited about the op portunity to serve young people in this capacity,” said Case. Case cites vocational agriculture enrollment trends and the need to show the public how well vo-ag programs are preparing students for agricultural careers as areas he plans to study and act upon. Chapter Farmer Degrees went to Michael Hershey, Renee Bass, Brian Simes, Brian Sweigart, Jay Marks, Bryan Stoltzfus, Lennie Martin Jr., Greg Kauffman, Jerry Feister and Todd Harnish. Red Lion FFA cites top members RED LION The Red Lion Area FFA Chapter held its annual FFA Banquet on April 10 in the Senior The nationwide search that ended in the selection of Case was made with the advice and counsel of representatives of vo-ag teachers, state supervisors of agricultural education, teacher educators and the Agricultural Division of the American Vocational Association (AVA). Raised on a farm in Stet, Mo., Case graduated in 1961 from Stet High School, where he was an FFA member. He received a bachelor’s in agricultural education in 1966 and a master’s degree in vocational education in 1972 from the University of Missoun- Columbia, where he completed his doctorate work in education in 1983. After serving as a vo-ag in structor for eight years at Nor thwestern, Orrick and Lexington High Schools in Missouri, Case was named director of vocational education at Lexington La-Ray Area Vocational School in 1974. Edwina Johnson was named the Chapter Star Farmer as out standing senior in the Red Lion Area FFA for the year. Michele Bankert was selected hs recipient of the DeKalb Award, which emphasizes scholarship, leadership and her farming program. John Eaton Jr. received the Star Greenhand Award, with the Michael Spangler Memorial Award for activities in the FFA and school extra curnculars going to James Eveler. Donald Walter and Arthur J. Glatfelter received the honorary chapter farmer award for their support in the FFA programs of the Red Lion Area Chapter. Members honored for their placings at state contests were Michele Bankert, gold in con servation public speaking; Edwina Johnson, silver plaque, Kelly Kilgore, silver, dairy judging; James Eveler, gold in meat identification. Maurice Schwartz and Susan Boyd were recognized as state band members. Members who received awards for state record book competition were Alan Taylor, bronze; Jerry Taylor, silver; Mike Heffner, gold; Edwina Johnson, gold. Edwina also received the Production Credit Association record keeping award for having the best record book in York County. National FFA Foundation awards went to Bruce Harrison, Ag Mechanics; John Eaton, Beef Production; Robert Wagner, Crop Production; Brian Bupp, Dairy Production; Jim Eveler, Fruit and Vegetable Production; Melissa Taylor, Horse Proficiency; Michele Bankert, Livestock Production: Tim Flory, Placement in Ag Processing; Wendy Flin chbaugh, Placement in Ag Production; Lester Holtzinger, Poultry Production; Ann Hut schenreuter, Public Speaking, Ed Keeny, Sheep Production; Michele Stearn, Swine Production; and Chris Clouser, Turf and Land scape. Awards for scholarship went to Michele Bankert, Brian Bupp, Alan Taylor, Ann Hutschenreuter, James Eveler, Susan Leiphart and John Eaton. The top salesman was Lester Holtzinger. Tim Fitzgerald and Tracey Steam were the chapter gilt winners. Also recognized were the 1983-84 chapter offices.
