Floral contest is held
UNIVERSITY PARK - The
Penn State Flower Judging Team
took second place in the In
tercollegiate Flower Judging and
Floral Design Contest held
recently at University Park.
Judging teams representing North
Carolina State University and the
University of Illinois won first and
third place, respectively. The
contest is sponsored annually by
the American Florists En
dowment; Pi Alpha Xi, national
floriculture and ornamental
horticulture fraternity; and SAF
Center for Commercial
Floriculture.
Alan Jones, Penn State, was
high-scorer in the individual
judging competition, followed by
Margaret Bortfeld of Michigan
State University who won first
place in cut flower classes.
This year’s desdign competition
was divided into four sections:
professional centerpiece class,
professional continental mixed
flower bouquet, nonprofessional
centerpiece class, and non
professional symmetrical triangle
class.

, different university each year,
drew 18 teams for its 1984 com
petition. Long distance travelers
included teams from the
University of California at Davis,
New Mexico State University,
Texas A & M, and Oklahoma State
University. The American Florists
Endowment and Pi Alpha Xi
contributed travel expenses for the
contest.
