Frog jumping contest scheduled

GROUND, Md. - The Fifth An
nual “Croaker” Frog Jumping
Contest will be one of the highlights
of the 1984 Aberdeen Proving
Ground Open House, scheduled
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday,
May 12.
Franklin 4-H Shepherds
Three new members joined the
Franklin County 4-H Shepherds at
the March meeting held recently at
the County Extension Office. They
are Roger Carbaugh, Mer
cersburg; Richard Rusting, St.
Thomas; and Kelby Mowery,
Chambersburg.

The only requirement for en
trants is to possess a frog. A
contestant may enter more than
one frog on separate registration
cards. The contest is scheduled to
start hopping at 9:30 a.m. in the
Ordnance Museum parking lot.
Registration, consisting of frog
weigh-ins and measurements, will
new 4-H Center project and about
the roadside trash pick-up to help
raise money for the Center. The
main topic of the meeting was
about the different breeds of sheep
suitable for market lamb projects.
The next meeting wil be held on
April 24 at the extension office.

about selecting a lamb for con
formation.

When called upon to perform, the
frogs will be placed on a tarp about
20-feet by 20-feet in the center of a
12-foot circle. At this time the
human “jockey” will try to jump
the frog.
After the frog is placed in the
center cirle, he cannot be touched
until after the third jump.
However, the “jockey” can jump
up and down, scream and shout to
encourage the frog to leap.
Two judges will determine the
jump lengths after the third hop,
skip or jump. The frog will be
allowed 15 seconds on each jump.
He will be disqualified if he does
not jump within the allotted time.
Last year’s event was won by the
Lewandowski family. Jennifer
Lewandowski, 19-months old,
claimed first prize while her 4-
year-old brother, David, captured
second place. Jennifer’s frog,
Jenny I, jumped 7’2” to claim the
victory and Frederick, David’s
frog followed, jumping 7’2” also.

High jumping frogs move to center stage during Aber
deen Proving Ground’s Fifth Annual "Croaker" Frog
Jumping contest. This crowd pleasing event is based on
Mark Twain’s story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of
Calaveras County." The contest, which will begin at 9:30
a.m., is just one of the many events scheduled for Aber
deen Proving Ground’s Annual Armed Forces Day Open
House on Saturday, May 12.
