FFA’ers compete in area public speaking contests BROWNSTOWN - Uncaster and Chester County Future Farm ers of America members, vying to compete in the state public speakmg contests this summer, moved one step closer to their goal as they participated in area competition last Thursday at the Brownstown Vocational Technical School. The FFA’ers, working their way through local and county contests, competed for the top spots in the parliamentary procedures, public speaking, extemporaneous speaking and FFA Creed categories. The top winners in this contest will advance to regional competition May 3, at Kutztown. Keeping its winning ways alive, the parliamentary procedures team from Eastern Uncaster County capped first place in that contest. Team members Kent Halsey, Margaret Herr, Uon Hurst, Nelson Horning, Elaine Zeiset, Jim Weidman, Dave Fisher and Wade Martin combined talents to edge out Solanco High School. Earning second place, the Solanco team will advance to regional competition also. Team members are Bryan Whitman, Tracy Undis, Kris Esbenshade, Jamie Frey, Uster Davis, Fritz Frey, John Riley Jr. and Randy Risser. Judging the parliamentary procedures contest were Caroline Witmer, State FFA president; Ronald Frederick, Twin Valley High School vocational agriculture teacher; and Christine Williams, Kutztown High School vocational agriculture teacher. First place public speaking honors went to Tom High, Ephrata High School. High’s winning speech was “The Gram Surplus.” Second place was earned by Greg Musser, Elizabethtown High School, speaking on “Where’s the Farmland,” and third went to Michelle Dean, Lampeter- Strasburg High School, who spoke on “Preserving the Family Farm.” Judges were Mary Ebersole, Sperry New Holland purchasing department; Forney Longenecker, a farmer and employee for Shearson American Express; and Ron Rill, Warwick High School guidance department. In the extemporaneous public speaking contest, Julie Hess, Eastern Lancaster County FFA Chapter, emerged as first place 4-H, UNIVERSITY PARK - Dairy cattle judging brought together 243 contestants recently for the first phase of Penn State’s 59th Dairy Exposition. Featured were 4-H and FFA teams from across the state, and university students. The overall winner in 4-H competition was the West moreland County “B” team. Members included Gary Fink, David Miller, Cindy Selembo, and Margee Wolff. Westmoreland County “B” team also captured first place in oral reasons. Their coach was Bruce Matson. Second place overall and third in reasons was the Berks County “A” team. The team was made up of Jay Bicksler, Patti Dreisbach, Todd Miller, and Clark Sattazahn. Dr. Carl Brown and Jerry Krone were the coaches. Taking third overall and second in reasons was the Perry County “A” team. Team members include Kim Kriebel, Jenny Kriebel, Judy Kriebel, and Irene Benner. The coaches were Jane and Kenneth Benner, and Jay Reapsome. winner with her speech on the importance of parliamentary procedures. Second place winner Tim Pfautz, Ephrata High School, was asked to speak on the im portance of supervised oc cupational experience programs, while third place finisher George Metzler, Octorara High Schodl, outlined the careers in agribusiness. Thd extemporaneous contest, in which the contestants are given a topic to address, was judged by Gerald Phillips, Production Credit of Uncaster; Jamie Rowley, personnel director for Wenger’s Feeds; and Barry Geib, past State FFA Treasurer. The Creed contest, open to first year FFA members only, was won by Paul Yeckley, Octorara High School. Randy Risser, Solanco High School, took second, and Bob Bergen, Owen J. Roberts, was third. Judges were Ron Martin, Eastern Region State FFA Vice President: Carl Groff, Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce agriculture committee; and Laura England, associate editor for Lancaster Fanning. The second place team overall in FFA, including oral reasons, was the Solanco High School “A” team, Quarryville. The team consisted of Mark Welk, Joe Delong, Brian Hamish, and Tom Arrowsmith. In third place overall was the Solanco High School “B” team. Team members included Andy Herr, Dave Herr, David Mull, and Keith Miller, The Solanco High School teams were coached by Arba Henry. Capturing second overall and second in oral reasons was Steven P. Shaw from Oley. Third overall and first in oral reasons was Marcia J. Minor of Washington. Norma R. Lash, of West Newton, placed third in oral reasons. In the amateur collegiate division, first place wnet to Mike L. Fair of Lebanon. Second place was captured by Carrie Yoder of Reedsville, while Jill R. Whorl from Emigsville placed third. There were no reason placings in this division.
