Br zostek, USDA Soil Conservation Service’s District Conservationist. With the use of the no-till drill, oats can be planted sooner, generally a day or two before fields can even be plowed. “No-tilling oats has three mam advantages it saves tune, soil, and promises increased yeilds,” reported Brzostek. “The no-till program is going extremely well in the county, especially with the drill,” he continues. “We had some real success last year with no-tilling timothy and alfalfa in late summer, and small grains in the fall. I am especially pleased with no-tilhng of timothy in old pastures and sod fields. “ Generally, farmers were leary to plow these fields for fear of “washing”, but now these fields can be successfully replanted without plowing. Farmer support of the no-till drill is growing rapidly. Thus far, more than 300 acres have been committed for the county’s drill, and the season’s just begun, ac cording to Brzostek. The county farmers have also purchased their own no-till drills. The Montgomery County Con servation District, besides leasing out a no-till drill, will have two no till com planters available. The cornplanters include a 4 row John Deere at $B/acre, and also a 4 row International equipped with TONNAGE TABLE FOR 8 FT.
