ways to conserve soil and water in
their operations are eligible to
participate in a national soil and
water conservation awards
program.
This marks the second annual
program, sponsored by the
National Endowment for Soil and
Water Conservation and the Du
Pont Company, which awards
(1,000 to each of three national
winners.
“The purpose of the awards
program is to salute farmers and
ranchers who are implementing
sound, innovative and cost
effective conservation
techniques,” says Emmett
Barker, Endowment chairman.
“These outstanding farmers and
ranchers deserve special
recognition and through this
program their conservation
initiatives are brought to the at
tention of other agricultural
producers and the public.”
A conservation farmer/rancher
will be selected from each state by
coordinating committees of farm,
conservation, and government

will review the conservation work
of the 50 state nominees selecting
10 national finalists on the basis of
their accomplishments in soil and
water resource management and
pollution abatement.
The 10 national finalists and
their spouses will receive an ex
pense-paid trip to Washington to
attend a national awards
ceremoney in the fall. Three
national winners will be selected
from among the 10 finalists.
Peny County 4-H Dairy Club
The Ferry county 4-H Dairy
Club met on April 5 at the New
Bloomfield Courthouse.
Mrs. Jane Brenner told the club
about the Pennsylvania Junior
Holstein Association trip to
Missouri to take place in June.
Mr. John Harris, county ex
tension agent, distributed and
explained calf and cow project
books to all members.
The next meeting, scheduled for
May 3 at 7:30 p.m., will be held at
the Ben Dum farm. “Fitting
projects for the round-up” will be
the topic.
