Jersey awards (Continued from Page A2O) uavid Parkinson, area representative from the American Jersey Cattle Club. He said that a Pennsylvania cow from the Vantage Farm herd of Don Koontz recently topped the Wisconsin sale and added that there are currently many Pennsylvania bulls being sampled in A.I. “Pennsylvania was number one in registrations in 1983, above any other state in the nation,” Parkinson told breeders. After the directors meeting, farm tours included Ralaine Jerseys, Everett; Stan-El Jerseys, Bedford; and Frederick Farm, Bedford. Ralaine Jerseys is owned and operated by Kay and Elaine Sollenberger and their children, Leon and Lori. Leon, and Lori organized the annual meeting and calf sale and are very active in the breed and in the showring. The Sollenberger farm numbers 70 milking cows that are fed a total mix ration of haylage, com silage, and grain. The current herd average is over 11,000 pounds with 574 pounds fat. One of the Sollenberger’s favorites, a B.S. Noble Superb daughter just milked 85 pounds for the tester with a 4.5% test. She was recently superovulated and flushed and the family is looking forward to two embryos by Top Brass. Family owned and operated, Frederick Farm features over 300 Jerseys milking and over 500 acres farmed. An impressive, drive through feeding barn with freestalls houses the 300 milking animals. Breeding philosophy is different at Frederick Farm and island bulls and bloodlines are utilized to keep with true Jersey type and high Jersey test. The Fredericks held a reduction sale last year and are planning a repeat sale in 1985 to let people realize how well island breeding can do in other herds.
