Farming, Saturday, March 31,1984 Oley Valley FFA honors its top award winners PLEASANTVILLE - The Oley Valley FFA Chapter honored its friends and outstanding members at the annual parent and member banquet on March 22 at the Pike Township Sportsman’s Club, Pleasantville. “This year was an exceptional year for our chapter,” stated James Howe, FFA advisor, referring to the achievements of his students. “I see some bright things in the future,” Howe continued as he awarded the Star Greenhand honors to two ninth graders. Kevin Bieber, Oley, and Missy Spayd, Fleetwood, received the plaques. “For ninth graders to get involved in public speaking and other ac tivities takes a lot of initiative,” Howe said about the pair. Star Chapter Farmer went to Jennifer Jesiolowski, Oley. Tulpehocken FFA honors Orendo as retiring advisor BERNVILLE - The Tulpehocken FFA Chapter honored its outstanding members and friends at the annual banquet and awards presentation Friday evening, March 23. “When you work with youth like \ I Mike Orendo, retiring advisor, was honored for his service to chapter by Tulpehocken FFA. The Dekalb award for the out standing senior went to Jim Heffner, Fleetwood. Jim is the current Berks County FFA president. He also received honors for his achievements in livestock judging at the FFA activities week contests, the record book contest, a silver medal for two enterprises, and also attained the Keystone Degree earlier this year. Other students receiving the academic achievement awards were Bryce Moyer, R 2, Oley, grade nine, and Jill Jesiolowski, Rl, Oley, grade 11. FFA foundation medals and certificates were earned by Jill Jesiolowski, prepared public speaking; Randy Martin, R 2, Oley, Swine production; John Baker, R 2 Oley, horse production; Kevin Guldin, R 4 Boyertown, agricultural mechanics; Greg Zook, R 2 Oley, diversified livestock production; Kevin Moyer, R 3 Boyertown, we have, there’s nothing better,' stated Mike Orendo, advisor. William Palmer, president of the chapter, was named the Star Chapter Farmer. “He’s one of the best presidents we have had,” stated Orendo. “He loves farming.” Palmer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Palmer, R 1 Bem ville. A senior this year, he also recieved the Dekalb award and a proficiency award in ex temporaneous speaking. Palmer raises beef and hopes to have his own farm after college. He plans to attend Penn State and major in agribusiness. Star Greenhand went to a veteran showman and 4-Her, Gary Bicksler, R 1 Richland. The son of Ray and Barbara Bicksler, Gary says he likes showing the best. He owns five Holsteins of his own and works on the home farm for his father. Lew Moyer, R 2 Bernville, received the Star Agribusinessman award. Lew likes dairy goats and plans to continue farming with his father, Charles Moyer. A special award was also presented to Mike Orendo, retiring ag teacher, for his dedicated service to FFA. A teacher for 35 years, Orendo stated that the high points in his career was seeing his students get established in agricultural positions. Orendo grew up in the district and although he spent time away from agriculture, returned to both and “has been doing something I loved ever since,” he states. Orendo belongs to the Flying Farmers. After his graduation, he joined the air force and received his pilots training there. He enrolled in Penn State and graduated in 1952 in ag education. He replaced his ag teacher when he came back to teach at Tulpehocken and although he is retiring says, “I’m going to keep my hands in agriculture.” Other awards went to: Honorary Chapter members - Robert Sattazahn and Francis McCafferty. Dairy Judging team awards - William Lesher, Clark Sattazahn. Certificate of Appreciation - Mr. and Mrs. William Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moyer, Nord Parkinson, Oscar Manbeck, David Williams, Jeffrey Keller, Larry Grumbine, Harvey Zimmerman, Steve Miller, William Lesher, Barry Kelner, and Anne Felty. Proficiency awards went to: Ag Mechanics, Tim Deck and Jim Beck; crop production, Lew Moyer; swine production, Connie YORK - York County FFA held its 1984 ag contests recently. In the small engines contest the top five winners were Shone Clements from Kennard-Dale; 2nd, Dave Webb from Kennard-Dale; 3rd, Lloyd Leiphart from Eastern; 4th, Kevin Rite from Kennard-Dale; and sth, James Klohold from Eastern. In Ag Mechanics winners were Ist, Robert Boothe, Kennard-Dale; 2nd, Randy Gross, Kennard-Dale, 3rd, Brian DeVoe, Kennard-Dale. showmanship, Jill Jesiolowski, prepared public speaking, Greg Zook, livestock judging. FFA state S.O.E. record book contest winners were: Mike Spayd, gold medal, Kevin Schlegel, gold medal, Kirk Fisher, silver meoal, Jim Heffner, silver medal, and Tim Shane, silver medal. Mike Spayd was also recognized for having been selected by the Pennsylvania Flower Growers Association as the state winner for his supervised occupational ex perience (S.O.E) record book and projects. Sentinel for the chapter, Greg Zook, presented the outstanding service awards to Roger Angstadt, R 2 Oley; Wayne Beekman, Boyertown; Dan Mast, Oley; Jim Shaw, Oley; and Louis Elvin, high school principal. “We sincerely appreciate their effort and concern to improve our chapter,” stated Zook. These individuals serve on the advisory council for vocational agriculture in the district. Honorary membership in the Oley Valley FFA was given to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schlegel, R 3 Boyertown.
